The Transition to College for the Student with LD/ADHD: What to
Disclose, What to Expect and Accomodations on the SAT/ACT

Joan Bisagno, Ph.D.
Assistant Vice Provost & Director
Office of Accessible Education
Stanford University
Friday, September 12, 2008.
Speaker: 9am - 11:30am. Registration & coffee: 8:30am.

College-bound students with LD and/or ADHD experience the same
transition process as their peers, but because of their learning and
attention difficulties they face additional challenges. For example,
students with LD/ADHD need to understand their particular learning
style, how it affects their ability to master different subject areas,
and how to explain it to others knowledgeably. They need a
well-developed repertoire of learning or compensatory strategies that
will allow them to capitalize on their strengths and circumvent their
weaknesses.

As incoming college freshmen, students with LD/ADHD also need to be
aware of their specific rights and responsibilities regarding access
to services. The student is now in the "driver's seat" with the shift
in responsibility from parents to young adult. At the postsecondary
level it's all about self-identification and self-advocacy. The
presentation will address topics such as these to assist students with
LD/ADHD make a smooth transition from high school to college. Come
prepared with your questions as there will be ample time for Q & A.
