College Advisor's Bulletin
Friday, June 13, 2008

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: COMMENCEMENT - a beginning, a start; a ceremony
at which academic degrees or diplomas are conferred. Although many
people think of commencement as the end of high school, it is also the
commencement of a new part of life.

Congratulations to all of you wonderful graduating seniors. You have
brightened our days here at Berkeley High. We will miss you, but know
that you are going out as mature young people. We hope that you will
pursue your dreams and find ways to make each of your own unique
contribution to the world. Please keep in touch during your journey
as we would love to hear about your adventures along the way. When
you are near Berkeley High, please stop by. Ms. Price and I would
love to see you.

For a wonderful article by Steve Jobs on why it's important to do what
you love and some advice on how to get there, go to
http://news-service.stanford.edu/news/2005/june15/jobs-061505.
Adults, share it with your students, and students, share it with the
significant adults in your lives.

An excellent book to read over the summer is College Unranked:
Affirming Educational Values in College Admissions by Lloyd Thacker.
Mr. Thacker is leading a campaign to end the commercialism in college
admissions and to focus instead on the educational and social needs of
students. In my view, his is a voice of sanity and caring which is
sorely needed.

The College/Career Center will be closed after today for the summer.

Ms. Price and I will be checking our e-mails periodically during the
summer. If problems or concerns arise, please feel free to contact us
at iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us and angela_price at berkeley.k12.ca.us .

Ms. Harris, Ms. Price and I wish you all a safe, relaxing and fun
vacation. We wish Ms. Harris a wonderful retirement, with lots of
time to spend with friends and family. We look forward to seeing
returning students in the fall.
