Administration

*1. Wednesday, May 7th will be late start.  Students arrive at school
at 10:00 am.

2. UC Berkeley's Arab Student Union presents "Arab Student Youth
Symposium" is this Saturday the 3rd of May from 12 noon - 5pm.  The
location is Tan Oak Room-4th floor.  UC Berkeley students will lead
campus tours, various workshops and cultural presentations for Arab
youth and youth of mixed orgins!  To register or if you have

*3. The tuxedo man will be here  today at lunch.

4. AP TEST SCHEDULE:All tests will be given in the Jacket Gym EXCEPT

Sports

1. Cheerleading practices are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4-6
in the Dance Room.  Newcomers are welcome to join.  You must have a
complete athletic packet, including a recent physical, to join the
practices.  A second tryout will be held to place all cheerleaders in
mid-May.  If you want to cheer in 2008, get out to practices and learn
the cheers.  Coaches are Ashley Jenkins and Theresa Whitchurch.  If
you have questions, contact coordinator Nichelle Garner at 776-8194.


All Students

*1. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - Thursday, May 22, Lake Temescal, East Bay
Regional Park District hosts Special Kids Fishing Derbies for disabled
elementary school children.  Every child needs an older "buddy" to
escort them through the day's activities.  Volunteers will attend an
orientation before the elementary students arrive, receive a free
t-shirt and breakfast and lunch.  For more information, call

Senior / Junior Section

1. SENIORS- Please take a look at the Potential GRAD list.  If you
find any discrepancies, please see Ms. Mellion in room D173 at
lunchtime or after school.  The list will be posted in the College
Advisors room- D221.

*2. JUNIORS - College Information Night, Tuesday, May 13, Scottish
Rite Center, 1547 Lakeside Dr., Oakland.  Student/Parent sessions
sponsored by Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Stanford.  

3. SENIORS - CAL GRANT - YOU HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE.  If you did not turn
in your Cal Grant Information Release Form before March 2, you have
another chance to do so.  Pick up a "Late Cal Grant GPA Verification
Form" from D173 and return it to Ms. Mellion no later than May 12.  

3. SCHOLARSHIPS
For the complete list of scholarship applications available in the
College/Career Center, go to http://www.bhs.berkeley.k12.ca.us/ ,
click on Services, then College/Career Center, then Scholarships.

Chinese American Citizens Alliance - open to graduating seniors of any
nationality who complete the application, including the required essay
part of the application.  Applications available in D221.  Received
deadline:  May 2.

Check Center Scholarship - Open to graduating seniors from Berkeley
High School with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who is planning to attend a
vocational/training school or a two or four year college or
university.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 5. 


Summer Opportunities

1. STAGE DOOR CONSERVATORY will be hiring three students to work as
apprentices from June 16 through August 25.  Apprentices will assist
with the day-to-day operation of our musical theater camp and with
rehearsals. They will also select and focus upon one specialty area
and focus on this area during their apprenticeship.  Each apprentice
will be paid a $1,000 stipend at the conclusion of the 10 week period
and can be absent for one week during the season, with the exception
of the weeks of August 2 and August 18. Program hours: 8:30 AM to 4:00
PM, MON - FRI. Apprentices must also work at our shows on August 8, 9
and 10 and 22, 23 and 24.  For more information and an application,

Counselor-in-training

2. Outward Bound Gay and Lesbian Youth Leadership Mountaineering
Course, July 11-20, 2008, Saguache Range, Colorado.  This 10-day
wilderness leadership course is designed for gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and transgendered young adults (ages 16-25) from across the country. 
During these transformational mountaineering adventures, students have
hands-on opportunities to challenge themselves both physically and
mentally. They work to strengthen leadership skills and test
problem-solving and risk-taking techniques both individually and as a
community of LGBT people. To learn more visit:
