SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  AFFRONT - to insult.  The new student thought it
would be fun to affront the PE teacher, but after having to do 500
pushups, he decided not to insult him again.

FOR ALL GRADES 
Free writing workshop, "Finding Your Voice," sponsored by Youth
Speaks, a national organization dedicated to Spoken Word performance,
education and youth development programs.  Facilitators: Katri Foster
and Lauren Whitehead.  Wednesdays 4-6pm in Room C327. This workshop
will encourage you to rethink what you've been told and to question
what you've assumed through creative exploration of the world around
you. All Youth Speaks After School Writing Workshops are FREE for
everyone and no registration is necessary.

ST. MARY'S COLLEGE FAIR - Saturday, April 26, from 1:00-4:30pm, come
to the St. Mary's College Fair to get information from over 150
college representatives from around the country.  Workshops on
admissions and financial aid in English and Spanish are also
available.  Free shuttles are available every 15 minutes beginning at
12:30 pm from the Orinda BART station. For more information, go to

CSF Members - Are you interested in a leadership position in Berkeley
High's CSF Chapter next year?  Applications for CSF President,

UC Berkeley's Pre-Pharmacy Informational, Learning, & Leadership
Society Presents the 2nd Annual Northern California Pre-Pharmacy
Symposium on Saturday, April 19, 2008, 9:00 am-5:00 pm at UC Berkeley
Barrows Hall. This conference is designed for anyone interested in or
pursuing a pharmacy career. The goals of the symposium are to inform
students on the application process for pharmacy school and present a
broad spectrum of possible pharmacy careers. Cost is $16 and includes

Volunteer opportunity - Want to work with kids? Berkeley Public
Library is looking for a few teenagers to help kids with their
homework and also to supervise play activities. Volunteers are needed
on Saturdays 10am-12pm and Wednesdays 6-8pm. This work is part of the
Berkeley Reads Family Literacy program, at the West Branch library.

Street Level Cycles, Berkeley Boathouse and Sew Your Own provide free
services and training for people of all ages to work on bike
mechanics, boat construction, and sewing. This is a great opportunity

Volunteer opportunity - Satellite Housing, a non-profit provider of
affordable housing for low income seniors, families and disabled
person, provides opportunities for residents to connect with their
neighbors.  BHS students - this is a great opportunity to connect with
older adults by creating a garden or participating in one to one
student conducted interviews to produce oral biographies or volunteer

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS - The 26th Annual Chicano Latino Youth
Leadership Project (CLYLP) Summer Conference will take place in
Sacramento at the California State University, Sacramento campus from
July 26th - August 2nd, 2008.  More than 2,000 California high school
students have participated in the summer conference with over 90% of
CLYLP participants going on to attend college.  Activities include a
legislative day at the state capitol, campaign development workshops
and a college and careers day, as well as leadership training.  Cost:

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Sarah's Science is looking for summer day camp counselors.  Students
must be at least 16 years old, have experience working with children
(babysitting counts), a positive attitude and enjoy guiding and
mentoring children ages 5-12 for science projects, art and camp
activities.  Camps are located in Oakland, Berkeley and Dublin.
Pay: $8.00/hour and up, depending on experience.  Applications

FOR JUNIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - May 6 is the regular registration deadline for
the June 7 SAT and SAT subject tests.  May 9 is the regular
registration deadline for the June 14 ACT test.  Fee waivers for low
income students are available in D221.   

FOR SENIORS
Are you planning to attend a UC campus in the fall?  If so, you must
take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam on May 10 unless you scored
30 or better on the Combined English/Writing test on the ACT; 680 or
better on the Writing section of the SAT reasoning test; or a 3, 4 or
5 on either AP English test.  For more information, including practice

Hispanic/Latino students - win free tickets to and from your college
campus.  Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges
and Universities (HACU) are sponsoring a travel award program.  If you
are enrolled in a two or four year college, have at least a 2.5 GPA
and economic need, you can apply for up to four round-trip tickets on
Southwest Airlines for yourself and/or your parent to use when
traveling to or from your college.  For more information, go to

BAYAC AmeriCorps, a collaborative of over 30 community service
organizations that serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay
Area.  As part of AmeriCorps, a federally funded national and
community service program, it offers high school graduates the
opportunity to work with youth in the Bay Area either part time or
full time in the areas of tutoring, afterschool activities, service
learning and volunteer coordination.  These are paid positions.  If

May 1 is the deadline for you to send a Statement of Intent to
Register (SIR) to one of the colleges which has accepted you.  After
that date, many colleges will withdraw your admission.  It is
unethical to send an SIR to more than one school and if colleges find
out that you have done so, they may rescind your admission.  If you
are waitlisted at your first choice school, you must deposit at
another school since no one will be admitted from the waitlist until
after May 1.  If you would like to discuss your college choices or
have questions about financial aid, waitlists, other schools which are
still accepting applications or anything else in the college
application process, please see your college advisor at lunch or after
school.  

SENIOR GRADES COUNT - Please remember that although this is your last
quarter of your senior year, you must keep your grades up if you are
planning to attend a four year college in the fall.  The college you
are planning to attend will receive a copy of your final transcript.
All admissions decisions are conditional based on your completion of
high school with roughly the same GPA as when you were admitted.
Colleges can and do revoke offers of admission.  Don't let this happen
to you! In addition, if you received a D or an F first semester, you
MUST let each of your colleges know now, if you haven't done so

SCHOLARSHIPS

*Manos de Esperanza - Open to graduating seniors with a minimum GPA of
2.8 who has financial need, plan to enroll in a two or four year
college program or graduate program and has involvement with the
community.  Several $500 scholarships are available.  Applications
available in D221.  Deadline:  April 30.

*Scotlan Scholarship Award - Open to graduating seniors from an
Alameda County high school who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have
participated in community service for at least two years, 
have financial need, and are U.S. citizens, native born. Scholarship:
$2,625 per year for four years. Applications available in D221.
Deadline:  April 30.

*Nahas Scholarship Award - Open to graduating seniors from an Alameda
County high school who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have participated in
community service for at least two years, have competed in a
competitive sports program for at least two years, and are U.S.
citizens, native born. Scholarship: $2,625 per year for four years.

Women's Network Employee Association of PG&E - Open to graduating high
school seniors who reside in a PG&E service area who have a minimum
GPA of 3.0, are interested in pursuing a degree in engineering, IT,
business, environmental, or other majors related to the energy field,
have  demonstrated leadership through active involvement in community
organizations, academic or vocational activities or student
organizations and will be attending an accredited college in fall

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority - Open to African American high school
seniors who plan on attending a four year college or university in the
fall and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  $250 scholarship.  Applications

Rotary Club of Berkeley - Open to graduating seniors who are planning
to attend a four year college in fall 2008 and has financial need to
attend college.  Four scholarships, up to $5,000 per student,
renewable for three additional years.  Applications available in D221.

Kensington Community Council Summer Day Camp - Camp for children in
grades 1-6 runs from June 16-August 22, Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00.
They are looking for students who have completed their junior year in
high school or older who enjoy working with kids.  Applications

FACES for the Future Program at Children's Hospital, Summer Medical
Academy for students 15 years of age and older.  The program will run
from July 7-18, Mon-Fri, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Children's Hospital
staff, physicians and local experts will lead workshops, labs,
clinical case studies and field trips.  Tuition is $1650 and covers
all program costs including breakfast and lunch, transportation and
