SAT WORD OF THE DAY: PIQUE – to irritate or annoy. I was piqued when
my teenage son refused to take out the trash, even though I had asked
him numerous times.
FOR ALL STUDENTS
Do you think that few people are looking at your profile on Facebook,
MySpace, Friendster and other social networking sites? Think again. A
recent poll conducted by the University of Massachusetts of 453 college
admissions offices found that 26% are actively researching students
through Google and other search engines and 21% are checking out social
networking profiles when reviewing applicants. For more information on
the study and some helpful hints on keeping your information private,
check out the article at

JUNIORS - Summer Internship at UCSF. If you are interested in a
research-intensive summer internship, the Department of Pediatrics at
UCSF has an excellent program to introduce you to the world of science.
You will work in a laboratory and assigned a designated research
project while working with a mentor, attend seminars, tour UCSF and
other universities. UCSF is looking for motivated and responsible
students and are particularly encouraging applications from women,
underrepresented minorities and talented and motivated students who
have experienced economic or other challenges that might limit their
ability to achieve these academic and career goals. Applications are
available in D221. An information session on the program will be held
on Saturday, December 8 at 1:00 pm at UCSF, 3333 California St., SF.
Application deadline: January 28.
Soroptimist Award – Open to women ages 14-17 who have demonstrated
initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it, who is
committed to making the world a better place, who has had significant
and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer. $1,000 award to 28
winners. Applications available in D221. Received Deadline: December
1.
FOR SENIORS
LAST DAY TO COMPLETE THE UC APPLICATION AND THE PRIORITY DEADLINE FOR
THE CAL STATES. THIS IS THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR MANY CAL STATE
CAMPUSES.
Financial Aid Part 2 – Tuesday, December 4, 6:30-8:30 pm, Berkeley High
library (English) and College/Career Center (Spanish). Representatives
from the UC Berkeley financial aid office will explain how to fill out
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required
to apply for financial aid by all U.S. colleges and universities. This
is a Cash for College event, so if more than 25 seniors are present,
one will win a $1,000 scholarship. Because this meeting will be very
crowded, we ask that only senior families attend.
SENDING TEST SCORES
1. If you are finished taking SAT’s and/or ACT’s and haven’t told
College Board or ACT to send your test scores to each UC and Cal State
campus where you are applying, do so ASAP. To send your SAT scores to
Cal State campuses, use the code 3594 (CSU Mentor) and you will only
have to pay once to make your scores available to each Cal State
campus. This service is not available through ACT.
2. If you’re taking the SAT and/or the ACT in December, make sure that
you have listed all of the UC’s and CSU’s on your registration form
(you can use the code 3594 to send all of your SAT scores to each CSU
campus) so that they will receive your scores. If you wait until you
get your scores and then tell the testing agency to send them, it will
be too late.
COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations. All
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center. You must also
pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you may
miss his or her class. This is a great opportunity to find out more
about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to meet the
admission officer who may be reading your application. Students may
not attend more than 10 college visits during the school year.
*TODAY - Friday, November 30

take classes in the big school.
