SAT WORD OF THE DAY: TUMULTUOUS – violently agitated; uproarious.  Many 
people describe the 1960’s as a very tumultuous era, characterized by 
demonstrations and other forms of protest in support of civil rights 
and against the Vietnam War across the U.S.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
Zoo Careers Night, Friday, September 21, 5:30-9:30 pm at the Oakland 
Zoo –Find out firsthand what working in a zoo is like and find out how 
you can get there yourself.  The program is designed for teenagers 
(ages 12-19).  Adults may attend, but only to accompany or chaperone 
their teens.  A chaperone is not required for teens to attend.  Cost:

Jobs Available
* King Middle School Afterschool ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish 
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 
and from 2:15-3:15 on Wednesday.  We'll also hire monolingual 
English-speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school 
students.  You must be good in Pre-Algebra and Algebra and/or Science.  
You must be able to help students read and understand literature and 
history books. You must be in 11th or 12th grade and able to get to 
King on time!  Pay:  $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, Room 7 
and ask for Patricia Rathwell or Akemi Hamai, or call 644-4811.

Albany Physical Therapy has an opening for a student to work 15-18 
hours per week (approximately 3 hours per day, Monday-Friday).  The 
student is responsible for filing, faxing, copying, laundry, 
straightening up treatment rooms and other miscellaneous jobs.  Contact 
Sherry at 526-2353.  Wages:  $8/hour.

Homework helper for 7th grade Latina in math and English, prefer junior 
or senior.  Located 5 blocks from BHS.  $12/hour.  Contact Micky

City of El Cerrito has immediate openings for jobs working with all 
ages of children in a variety of recreation settings.  Students must be 
at least 16 years old.  Flexible scheduling around school schedules.  
Pay:  $10.25-$14.86 per hour depending on experience.  Apply at the El

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*Keeping King’s Legacy Alive Scholarship - develop and submit a script 
for a 30 second public service announcement contributing to the public 
understanding of Dr. King's life and the movements inspired by his 
message of peace through social justice. Five finalists will be invited 
to meet with local film producers and representatives from the MLK 
Institute to share the inspiration behind their PSA. Of the finalists, 
one team will be chosen and those individuals/group will get to shoot 
their PSA with professional film producers, which will be aired on the 
Yahoo! website and on local TV stations on Martin Luther King Day 2008. 
Members of the winning team will also receive a $2500 scholarship. For

Deadline to submit proposals – September 21, 2007

*FREE SAT TEST PREP CLASSES – People’s Test Preparation Service will be 
offering free SAT prep classes beginning on Tuesday, September 18.  
Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in 
room G302 for 10 weeks.  No registration is necessary.

FOR SENIORS
TONIGHT - SENIOR PARENT COLLEGE NIGHT – Monday, September 10, 6:30 pm 
in the Berkeley High library. Ms. Price and I will be giving a detailed 
overview of the college application process.  Please come by to get all 
your questions answered.

SENIORS:  Ms. Price and I will continue speaking to senior English 
classes this week.  You will be able to sign up for an individual 
appointment beginning on Monday, September 17 at 8:00 am in the 
College/Career Center.  Sign-up sheets will remain open for the rest of 
the semester.  Until then, please stop by at lunch or after school to 
get your questions answered.

REMINDER:  If you are applying to private colleges which need a 
counselor recommendation, your Senior Profiles were due on Friday if 
you are applying Early Decision or Early Action or to any school which 
requires a recommendation by November 1 and September 21st for Regular 
Decision.  You do NOT need to fill these out if you are applying only 
to the UC’s, Cal State Universities or community colleges.

COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors, sign up in D221 to attend college presentations.  All 
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center.  You must also 
pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you may 
miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find out more 
about what individual colleges have to offer as well as to meet the 
admission officer who may be reading your application.   Students may 
not attend more than 10 college visits during the school year.   A

SCHOLARSHIPS
Sinkler Miller Medical Association Scholarship – Open to graduating 
seniors who are SF Bay Area residents with a minimum cumulative GPA of 
3.0 who have financial need.  12 scholarships of $1,000-$1,500 will be 
awarded.  Deadline:  September 20.  Applications available in D221.

Good Tidings Community Service Scholarship – Open to seniors who live 
in the SF Bay Area, have participated in community service and have 
financial need.  Scholarships range from $2,5000 to $5,000.  Deadline:  
November 9.  Applications available in D221.

Ron Brown Scholarship Program – open to black or African American 
seniors who have shown leadership, commitment to public service and a 
desire to make a difference, have financial need and are a US citizen 
or permanent resident.  Scholarship is for $10,000 per year for four 
years.  The deadline is November 1 to be eligible for other 
scholarships through the Ron Brown program or January 9, 2008 for the 
Ron Brown Scholarship only.  Applications available in D221.
