For the second year in a row, Berkeley High School's rowing team came
home with a silver medal in the U.S. Rowing Southwest Regional Junior
Championship, held this weekend at Lake Natoma, in Folsom, CA. The
team's second-place finish in the Men's Lightweight 4+ category earns
them a slot at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, which
will be held in Cincinnati, OH June 8-10. Last year, Berkeley High
went all the way for a gold medal in this same category at the U.S.
Rowing Youth National Championships; which attracts over 100 teams
and 1000 rowers from around the country. This year Berkeley High will
defend their title.
The Berkeley High Men's Lightweight 4+ team, composed of freshman
coxswain Oliver Sweibel, juniors Ian Horton and Patrick Stolcke, and
seniors Cole Pedicone and Sam Paul, competed on Saturday, May 19th
against teams from Oakland Strokes, Capital Crew, Nor Cal Crew, Serra
High Crew, Marina Aquatic Center, and Los Gatos Rowing. After
qualifying in their first heat, the Berkeley boat advanced to the
final race later that afternoon. In the final race Berkeley High
competed against Marina Aquatic Center, Oakland Strokes, Marin Rowing
Association, Capital Crew, and the San Diego Rowing club. The
Berkeley boat came in second by 13 seconds to Marina Aquatic Center.
As the only public high school competing in the Regional
Championship, the Berkeley High rowers compete against much larger
club teams and private schools that recruit athletes from a broad
range of students throughout their communities. With the same passion
and dedication they used to win and advance to the Nationals, the
team will be fundraising to cover the expenses for their trip to the
Nationals. To see pictures and more information about the team visit
