SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  MISAPPREHENSION – an incorrect understanding or  
perception.  Education efforts try to refute the common misapprehension  
that AIDS is a disease that only gay people can contract.

FOR ALL GRADES
Volunteers needed to work with students in elementary through junior  
high school – after school or during the summer.  Call Berkeley Youth  
Alternatives at 647-0712 or go to www.byaonline.org for more  
information and the volunteer application.

Classroom Matters is offering free group tutoring sessions tailored to  
BHS students. For a two week period beginning Monday, March 19th, you  
can try our group tutoring at no cost (normal rates are $30 per  
session).   Groups vary in size from 2-5 students.  Each group will  
meet for one hour and will focus on a single subject area from Berkeley  
High School curriculum. Classroom Matters is located  within walking  
distance of  BHS (or AC transit #9): 2436 Sacramento Street Center (off  
of Dwight way).

Tuesday:         4-5 PM     French (all levels; level to be decided  
based on interest)

FOR JUNIORS
People's Test Preparation Service is sponsoring a workshop on careers  
in the health field - pre-nursing, pre-med, pre-dentistry,  
pre-pharmacy.  Saturday, March 17 from 3-4 pm at 235 Dwinelle Hall on

FOR SENIORS
The Young Conservatory at American Conservatory Theater is offering a  
special scholarship for high school seniors in Alameda County to attend  
classes offered in the Spring Session (March 19-May 26, after school  
and weekend schedule) and their 4-week Summer 2007 Session (daytime  
classes June 18-July 13). The spring class schedule and scholarship  
application is available in D221. The scholarship, offered on a first  
come, first serve basis is for one class in either the 2007 Spring  
Session or the 4-Week Summer session. Students applying must meet  
regular standards of admission and must be able to commit to the full  
course selected.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES –March 23 is the late registration deadline for the  
April 14 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.  April 3 is the regular  
registration deadline for the May 5 SAT test.  Register at  
www.collegeboard.com.

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Kim and Harold Louise Family Foundation – Open to seniors with minimum  
unweighted GPA of 3.5, a minimum SAT score of 1900 who is planning to  
attend a US college or university or vocational program next year.   
Students with financial need or who have parents who did not attend  
college or who have overcome adversity or are first-generation  
immigrants will be given special consideration.  $50,000 will be  
distributed among the awardees.  Deadline:  April 7.  Applications  
available in D221.

Richard D. Navies Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors who are U.S.  
citizens or legal residents who are a varsity athlete this year, has a  
minimum GPA of 2.5 and minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 900 who  
demonstrate leadership and commitment to service and have good  
sportsmanship and a positive attitude.  Two scholarships of $2,500  
each.  Deadline:  May 1.  Applications available in D221.

Aztec Scholarship Program – Applicant must be a Latino or Latina  
Oakland resident graduating from high school and entering a four year  
university, community college, art institute or vocational school for  
the 2007-2008 school year.  Most are based on scholastic achievement  
and financial need.  Ten scholarships will be awarded.  Nine are in the  
amount of $1,000 and one is for $2,000 per year for four years.   
Deadline:  April 6.  Applications available in D221.

Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship for Social Justice – open  
to graduating senior who plans to attend a two or four year university  
in the fall who has participated in work to further the cause of social  
justice in high school and plans to continue that work in college and  
beyond, has financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Deadline:  April  
11.  Applications available in D221.  Minimum value of $1,000.

New American College Fund Educators for Fair Consideration – students  
must be born outside of the U.S., have financial need, have lived in  
California for 3 or more years of their high school career, have a  
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend a two or four year  
college in the fall.  Scholarship: $2,000.  Deadline:  March 30.   
Applications available in D221.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship – Open to African and African American  
seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend  
college immediately after graduation. Scholarship value up to $1,000.   
Deadline:  April 30.

Rotary Club of Berkeley – open to seniors with financial need who would  
otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college.  Also  
taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores,  
extracurricular activities.  Applicants cannot be relatives of a living  
Rotarian.  Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four years.   
Deadline: April 11

Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship – Open to Berkeley  
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in  
Berkeley Unified School District.  Scholarship amounts vary.  Deadline:  
  March 30.  Applications available in D221.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Below are a few of the summer opportunities available.  Check out the  
“Summer” box in the College/Career Center to read about many more.

*Spelman Summer Science Program - The Howard Hughes Summer Science  
Program, sponsored by the Spelman College Biology Department is for  
current female juniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 interested  
in pursuing careers in biology, biochemistry and other  
biomedical-related fields. The program is a five-week residential  
program from June 17-July 20. This program is designed to provide  
participants with an integrative science educational experience and to  
develop their interpersonal skills. A stipend will be provided. This  
stipend is subject to federal and state taxes. Room and Board is  
provided for the program. Application deadline: March 30. For program

Summer high-school apprenticeship research program (SHARP), 6/18-7/13,  
at UC Berkeley.  SHARP is a 4-week long program for 10-15 high-school  
students who will be seniors in Fall 2007 and have had some math and  
science background for hands-on research.  They are particularly  
looking for students who may not have any experiences in doing research  
in science and engineering. Students must be US citizens or permanent

Constitutional Rights Foundation Summer Law Institute at UCLA - An  
exciting week-long (July 29-August 4) summer program at UCLA for high  
school students interested in learning more about the American legal  
system. The cost of the camp is $1200 and covers room, board, and  
transportation while attending camp. It is the student's responsibility  
to pay for transportation to and from camp.

FACES Summer Medical Academy at Children's Hospital.  This program runs  
from July 9-20, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.  The program  
is open to students 15 years and older who are interested in learning  
about medicine and medical school.  Students participate in clinical  
skills workshops, gross anatomy and DNA labs, field trips, case studies  
and hear guest speakers including physician and patient panels.  Cost:   
$1,500.  Application deadline:  April 27.  Applications available in

Are you interested in learning how to design cars?  Lawrence  
Technological University in Missouri has an Automotive Design Summer  
Camp, June 25-29. Scholarships are available.  For information, call

City of Berkeley Youthworks is taking applications for the 2007 Summer  
Session.  Students aged 14-21 who are Berkeley residents may pick up an  
application at the Youthworks office at 1947 Center St (Basement  
level).  The Youthworks office hours are: 8am - 5pm, Monday through  
Friday.   Applications will be available March 5th - March 30th.   
Completed applications must be returned by March 30th to be considered.

Engineering Camp for current 11th graders at the University of Houston.  
   To encourage low income students to attend, the entire cost of the  
two week program, including room and board, is $200.  Scholarships for  
up to $150 are available.  Students are given the opportunity to learn  
about various engineering disciplines, visit engineering companies,  
participate in project-based learning on subjects including robotics  
and engineering design, field trips, panel discussions, and fun at the  
campus sports and recreation center.  African-American and Latino  
students are especially encouraged to apply.  All applicants must be  
U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  For more information, contact
