SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PLIABLE – easily bent or flexible.  NASA had to 
devise a new, more pliable spacesuit for astronauts to use as they 
built the space station.

FOR ALL GRADES
*SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – Volunteer at one of the 15 Camp Galileo 
sites in the Bay Area.  Positions include:  Counselor in Training and 
Team Leader (12th grader only, paid position).  As a volunteer, Camp 
Galileo trains staff members in teaching techniques, observation and 
feedback that helps staffers improve their skills.  Learn more about

SPRING BREAK OPPORTUNITY - Spring Youth TV Camp 2007.  Learn:  
Directing, Hosting, Camera, Audio, Switching, Graphics, Interviewing 
and Writing a television show.  Berkeley Youth TV Camp at Berkeley 
Community Media (BCM) will teach you how to create your own television 
show from beginning to end.  Shows will be aired on cable TV in 
Berkeley on B-TV Channels 28 and 33. Youth participants will get 
experience working in every crew position.  By the end of the week-long 
session, you will be certified in studio production at BCM and can 
continue to create your own shows for free!  Participants will also 
receive a free membership to BCM and be eligible to take other classes 
throughout the year.  Classes are held from April 2-6, Monday-Friday 
1:00-5:00 pm at 2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Way (in the G Building of 
Berkeley High).  Ages: 13-20 years old.  Cost:  $200 (financial aid is 
available). Application Deadline:  March 12, 2007.

20th Annual Health Careers Conference for Students of Color – Saturday, 
March 10, 9:00 am-2:30 pm at the Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley.  
This free conference will provide information on career choices in the 
health care field, how to prepare, financial resources available to 
help you and will give you a chance to talk with professionals in the 
field.  Lunch and refreshments are free to registered participants.

FOR SOPHOMORES
Summer paid internship – Biotech Academy is offering an eight week 
internship program where students learn  to use DNA fingerprinting 
techniques, gain unique on-the-job training and career path information 
at companies like Bayer Healthcare and Lawrence Berkeley Lab.  Students 
must have at least a 2.0 GPA or have a goal of raising their grades 
during junior year.  Applications due Monday, March 5.  Pick up an 
application in G305 or G304.

Community College Day is Coming – Tuesday, March 13.  Sign up in D221 
to get information including special programs offered at each college 
and how to apply and register for courses  at one or more of the 
following colleges:

The Young Conservatory at American Conservatory Theater is offering a 
special scholarship for high school seniors in Alameda County to attend 
classes offered in the Spring Session (March 19-May 26, after school 
and weekend schedule) and their 4-week Summer 2007 Session (daytime 
classes June 18-July 13). The spring class schedule and scholarship 
application is available in D221. The scholarship, offered on a first 
come, first serve basis is for one class in either the 2007 Spring 
Session or the 4-Week Summer session. Students applying must meet 
regular standards of admission and must be able to commit to the full 
course selected.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 9 is the regular registration deadline for 
the April 14 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.  April 3 is the 
regular registration deadline for the May 5 SAT test.  Register at 
www.collegeboard.com.

SCHOLARSHIPS
New American College Fund Educators for Fair Consideration – students 
must be born outside of the U.S., have financial need, have lived in 
California for 3 or more years of their high school career, have a 
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend a two or four year 
college in the fall.  Scholarship: $2,000.  Deadline:  March 30.  
Applications available in D221.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship – Open to African and African American 
seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend 
college immediately after graduation. Scholarship value up to $1,000.  
Deadline:  April 30.

East Bay Consortium Scholarship – Open to seniors planning to attend a 
two or four year accredited college with a minimum GPA of 2.8 if 
planning to attend a four year college or 2.0 if attending a community 
college who have demonstrated active participation in extra curricular 
activities and have financial need.  Deadline:  April 6.  At least 36 
scholarships of $2,500 for students attending a four year college and 
ten scholarships of $1,000 for students attending community college.

Rotary Club of Berkeley – open to seniors with financial need who would 
otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college.  Also 
taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores, 
extracurricular activities.  Applicants cannot be relatives of a living 
Rotarian.  Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four years.  
Deadline: April 11

Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship – Open to Berkeley 
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in 
Berkeley Unified School District.  Scholarship amounts vary.  Deadline: 
  March 30.  Applications available in D221.

Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship – open to Berkeley High seniors who 
will be attending a two or four year college in the fall with a minimum 
GPA of 2.5.  Scholarships range from $500-$4,000.  Deadline:  March 12.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Below are a few of the summer opportunities available.  Check out the 
“Summer” box in the College/Career Center to read about many more.

City of Berkeley Youthworks is taking applications for the 2007 Summer 
Session.  Students aged 14-21 who are Berkeley residents may pick up an 
application at the Youthworks office at 1947 Center St (Basement 
level).  The Youthworks office hours are: 8am - 5pm, Monday through 
Friday.   Applications will be available March 5th - March 30th.  
Completed applications must be returned by March 30th to be considered.

Engineering Camp for current 11th graders at the University of Houston. 
   To encourage low income students to attend, the entire cost of the 
two week program, including room and board, is $200.  Scholarships for 
up to $150 are available.  Students are given the opportunity to learn 
about various engineering disciplines, visit engineering companies, 
participate in project-based learning on subjects including robotics 
and engineering design, field trips, panel discussions, and fun at the 
campus sports and recreation center.  African-American and Latino 
students are especially encouraged to apply.  All applicants must be 
U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  For more information, contact

California College of the Arts Pre-College Summer Program.  Open to 
students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2007.  A three 
week program is available for rising sophomores.  Courses available in 
creative writing, architecture, animation, community arts/drawing, 
drawing and painting/sculpture, fashion design, film/video, graphic 
design, illustration/printmaking, drawing/printmaking, industrial 
design, jewelry/metal arts, painting/drawing, photography – either 
black and white, color or digital.  Scholarships are available.
