FOR ALL GRADES
20th Annual Health Careers Conference for Students of Color – Saturday,
March 10, 9:00 am-2:30 pm at the Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley.
This free conference will provide information on career choices in the
health care field, how to prepare, financial resources available to
help you and will give you a chance to talk with professionals in the
field. Lunch and refreshments are free to registered participants.

FOR SOPHOMORES
Summer paid internship – Biotech Academy is offering an eight week
internship program where students learn to use DNA fingerprinting
techniques, gain unique on-the-job training and career path information
at companies like Bayer Healthcare and Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Students
must have at least a 2.0 GPA or have a goal of raising their grades
during junior year. Applications due Monday, March 5. Pick up an
application in G305 or G304.
Do you want to engage in hands-on leadership training? Intern at a
professional work place? Meet diverse youth from the Bay Area? Get the
skills and experience to be a change-maker in your community? Stand out
in your college applications? Earn a $1,000 stipend? Coro’s Exploring
Leadership, a full-time summer and part-time fall program, will allow

Community College Day is Coming – Tuesday, March 13. Sign up in D221
to get information including special programs offered at each college
and how to apply and register for courses at one or more of the

The Young Conservatory at American Conservatory Theater is offering a
special scholarship for high school seniors in Alameda County to attend
classes offered in the Spring Session (March 19-May 26, after school
and weekend schedule) and their 4-week Summer 2007 Session (daytime
classes June 18-July 13). The spring class schedule and scholarship
application is available in D221. The scholarship, offered on a first
come, first serve basis is for one class in either the 2007 Spring
Session or the 4-Week Summer session. Students applying must meet
regular standards of admission and must be able to commit to the full
course selected.
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 9 is the regular registration deadline for
the April 14 ACT test. Register at www.act.org. April 3 is the
regular registration deadline for the May 5 SAT test. Register at
www.collegeboard.com.
SCHOLARSHIPS
*Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Elsie Carrington Rumford Scholarship –
open to African-American females with minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who
is a U.S. citizen and planning to attend either a vocational program, a
two year associate degree program or a four year college. A total of
$8,000 will be awarded from all Alpha Kappa Alpha scholarships.
Deadline: April 20.
*Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Olga Jane Lewis Scholarship – open to
African-American females with minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 who is a
U.S. citizen and planning to attend either UC Berkeley or an
historically Black college or university. A total of $8,000 will be
awarded from all Alpha Kappa Alpha scholarships. Deadline: April 20.
*Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Ida Louise Jackson Scholarship – open to
African-American females with minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5 who is a
U.S. citizen and planning to attend a four year college. A total of
$8,000 will be awarded from all Alpha Kappa Alpha scholarships.
Deadline: April 20.
New American College Fund Educators for Fair Consideration – students
must be born outside of the U.S., have financial need, have lived in
California for 3 or more years of their high school career, have a
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend a two or four year
college in the fall. Scholarship: $2,000. Deadline: March 30.
Applications available in D221.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship – Open to African and African American
seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 who are planning to attend
college immediately after graduation. Scholarship value up to $1,000.
Deadline: April 30.
Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship – open to seniors from a
Chicana/Latina background with an unweighted GPA of at least 2.5 who
will be attending a two or four year college or vocational school in
the fall. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a
requirement. Deadline: April 1. Scholarship: $250.
East Bay Consortium Scholarship – Open to seniors planning to attend a
two or four year accredited college with a minimum GPA of 2.8 if
planning to attend a four year college or 2.0 if attending a community
college who have demonstrated active participation in extra curricular
activities and have financial need. Deadline: April 6. At least 36
scholarships of $2,500 for students attending a four year college and
ten scholarships of $1,000 for students attending community college.
Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award – open to graduating
African-American females with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need.
Essay required. Deadline: April 2. Scholarships range from $500 to
$2,000.
Latino and Native American Association (LANA) – open to high school
seniors of Latino or Native American descent with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Deadline: April 2. $500 scholarship.
Wa Sung Community Service Club Merit Scholarship – applicants must be
graduating senior of Asian descent residing in Alameda or Contra Costa
County who will be attending college in fall 2007. Seven to ten
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded.
Rotary Club of Berkeley – open to seniors with financial need who would
otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college. Also
taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores,
extracurricular activities. Applicants cannot be relatives of a living
Rotarian. Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four years.
Deadline: March 16
Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship – Open to Berkeley
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in
Berkeley Unified School District. Scholarship amounts vary. Deadline:
March 30. Applications available in D221.
Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship – open to Berkeley High seniors who
will be attending a two or four year college in the fall with a minimum
GPA of 2.5. Scholarships range from $500-$4,000. Deadline: March 12.
Kiwanis Club Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors. One scholarship
is for students who are planning to attend a four year college. The
other is for students who are planning an alternative or trade school
path. Essay and recommendations are required. Deadline: March 29. A
total of $40,000 will be awarded. Applications available in D221.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Below are a few of the summer opportunities available. Check out the
“Summer” box in the College/Career Center to read about many more.
California College of the Arts Pre-College Summer Program. Open to
students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2007. A three
week program is available for rising sophomores. Courses available in
creative writing, architecture, animation, community arts/drawing,
drawing and painting/sculpture, fashion design, film/video, graphic
design, illustration/printmaking, drawing/printmaking, industrial
design, jewelry/metal arts, painting/drawing, photography – either
black and white, color or digital. Scholarships are available.

Americans for Informed Democracy offers a two-week summer enrichment
program for rising juniors and seniors in high school interested in
international relations. Called Global Scholar, the program is held at
Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia from July 1-14,
2007. Global Scholar is a college prep and leadership development
program that builds global competence. Students hear from global
leaders and delve into a World Affairs curriculum modeled on a college
level course. They will also have the chance to videoconference with
their peers halfway around the world, visit leading global
institutions, journey to foreign countries through film, and devise
global campaigns to respond to today's most pressing global challenges.
Cost: $1,600. Several full and half scholarships are available. For
