SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INUNDATE – to flood or swamp.  When it flooded in 
1994, the Mississippi River inundated millions of acres of Midwest 
farmland.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
Full scholarships are available for a high school exchange program in 
Germany.  No previous German language is required.  Partial 
scholarships are also available for 16 other countries.  Students can 
choose from summer, semester and academic year programs.  Apply at

You are a SUPERHERO! Essay contest.  Write a creative story about you, 
the Superhero.  Application and more information available in D221.  
Received deadline:  January 1.  The top 3 student essays will win $250 
each.

POETRY PRIZE FOR HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS- The Kenyon Review is 
now accepting submissions for the 2007 Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for 
Young Writers contest. Application period for submission of poetry is 
November 1-30, 2006.  There is no fee for submitting.  Submit your 
poetry online at http://www.kenyonreview.org.  Only one unpublished 
poem, one entry per person will be accepted.  The winner will receive a 
full scholarship to the Kenyon Review Young Writers workshop, and the 
poem will be published in the Kenyon Review, one of the country's most 
prestigious literary magazines.  Two runners-up will also see their 
poems published. Semi-finalists will be featured online at this web 
site.

United Nations Association-USA National High School Essay Contest.  
Open to all students, grades 9-12.  Write an essay of 1,500 words or 
less on the importance of maternal health.  First prize:  $3,000; 
second prize: $1,500; third prize: $750.  The exact questions are 
available in D221.  Deadline:  January 5, 2007.  Questions:  phone

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The Center for Clinical Immunology at Stanford University Summer Intern 
Program.  If you are a current junior or senior who will have completed 
a biology class by the end of this school year and are interested in 
biology research, apply for this 8 week summer program consisting of 
lab research, lecture and some clinical exposure.  The program includes 
a $1,500 stipend to each attendee.  Housing is not provided.

FOR SENIORS
*FINANCIAL AID – If you are applying for financial aid, you cannot fill 
out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid which is required by 
all colleges until January 1, 2007.  However, you can apply for your 
Personal Identification Number (PIN) now so that you will be ready to 
submit your application online.  Go to www.pin.ed.gov and fill out this 
very short application twice – once to get a PIN for the student and 
once for one parent.

*FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP FOR SENIOR PARENTS – Thursday, December 7, 6:30 
pm in the BHS library.  A representative from the UC Berkeley financial 
aid office will walk us through the Free Application for Federal 
Student Aid (FAFSA) line by line and answer all of your questions.  I 
will also discuss the CSS Profile which is required by some private 
schools.

Are you a senior African-American male who is interested in becoming a 
teacher?  You may be able to go to college for FREE!  This program is a 
collaboration between Clemon University and three black colleges 
(Benedict College, Claflin University and Morris College) to train, 
certify and secure employment for African-American males in South 
Carolina.  If you are interested, go to

Get help with your college essay or personal statement!  Essay readers 
are available in D221 every day from 8:00 to 9:00 am, at lunch time and 
every day after school except Friday.  These readers are a great help 
and give you a new perspective on your essay.

UC/CSU APPLICATION WORKSHOPS: You must sign up in D221 to attend.  All 
workshops will be held in the Library Computer Lab.

for the January 27 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Metro PCS Community Scholars - Graduating senior who has shown 
exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service. 
Leadership, academic record, unusual personal or family circumstances 
are also considered.  Financial need is not considered.  15 
scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in the SF Bay Area.  
Deadline:  December 11.  Applications available in D221 and at

Mahatma Rice/Univision Radio Scholarship Program – Must be a high 
school senior in a Bay Area high school and submit an essay on the 
subject “Explain the personal challenges (other than financial) you 
expect to overcome in college.”  Entries may be in English or Spanish.  
Applications available at www.carolinarice.com/scholarship   Deadline: 
February 15, 2007.
