SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DEPRECATE – to express disapproval of someone.  
It’s not wise to deprecate someone if they have made a legitimate 
error; it is much better to offer constructive criticism.

I will be away from school on November 1 and 2 visiting colleges.  
Please come by at lunch or after school today if you need to see me 
this week.  There will be no College Advisor’s bulletin on Thursday and 
Friday.

SENIOR PARENTS – Sue Kim’s presentation on financial aid, given at 
Berkeley High on October 3, is now available on DVD.  You may borrow it 
for up to two nights.  Please e-mail me if you are interested in 
borrowing the DVD and I will put you on the list.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
*Brown University is offering current 10th, 11th and 12th graders with 
strong interest in biology or the physical sciences the opportunity to 
study volcanoes, marine science and rainforest ecology in Hawaii.  
There are two trips:  April 6-13 and April 15-22.  For more

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS – Join the Student Conservation Association 
Leadership Corps.  This is an eight month long outdoor service learning 
program.  Applications and information available in D221.

College Night, Thursday, November 2, 6:00-8:00 pm at College of Alameda 
Gymnasium, Building G, 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway (Atlanta 
Avenue), Alameda, 748-2397.  Representatives from many UC’s, Cal States 
and private colleges as well as workshops on financial aid, UC and CSU 
admissions, community college transfer programs and benefits.

Free SAT practice test on Saturday, November 11, 9 am – 2 pm at Merritt 
College, Building A, Room A129, 12500 Campus Drive, Oakland.  Call

students will win a free ipod.

Young Engineers & Scientists Day at UC Berkeley.  Design competition, 
academic/major workshops, campus tours, prizes, free food.  November

Bay Area Travel Writers Travel Writing Contest – open to Bay Area high 
school students.  Students must submit a 500 word essay concerning a 
travel destination, experience of activity.  Travel essays concern the 
idea and experience of travel – whether the writer has traveled to the 
other side of the world, down the block or anywhere in between.  
Postmark deadline:  October 31.  $200 first prize.  More information 
available in D221.

Bennington Young Writers Award - OPEN TO 10TH, 11TH AND 12TH GRADE 
STUDENTS. Students may submit poetry (a group of 3 poems), fiction (a 
short story or one-act play) or nonfiction (a personal or academic 
essay).  First place: $500; Second place: $250.  Submission forms are 
available in D221 or at www.bennington.edu under “News & Events.” 
Postmark deadline: November 1.

FOR SENIORS
* If you are applying to private colleges that need a counselor 
recommendation, your envelopes and forms are due in D221 no later than 
November 9.  Questions?  See Mr. Saraceno, Ms. Harris or Ms. Abrams.

Get help with your college essay or personal statement!  Essay readers 
are available in D221 every day from 8:00 to 9:00 am and at lunch time 
and on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday after school.  These readers are 
a great help and give you a new perspective on your essay.

also pick up an authorization form for your teacher to sign so that you 
may miss his or her class.  This is a great opportunity to find out 
more about individual colleges as well as meet one of the people who 
may be reading your college application.  Pick up a complete list in

registration deadline for the December 2 SAT test.  Register at 
www.collegeboard.com.  November 3 is the regular registration deadline 
for the December 9 ACT test.  Register at www.act.org.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Mahatma Rice/Univision Radio Scholarship Program – Must be a high 
school senior in a Bay Area high school and submit an essay on the 
subject “Explain the personal challenges (other than financial) you 
expect to overcome in college.”  Entries may be in English or Spanish.  
Applications available in D221.  Deadline: February 15, 2007.
