SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  AUSTERE – severe; strict.  The austere life at 
the monastery was hard to live by, so sometimes the monks broke down 
and ordered out for pizza and beers.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
Black College Tours – visit Clark Atlanta, Tuskegee, Southern and more. 
  April 1-7 (during BHS spring break).  Informational meeting will be 
held on Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 pm, Rock of Truth Baptist Church, 
459 – 61st Street, Oakland.  For more information, contact Ivery

*Bennington Young Writers Award - OPEN TO 10TH, 11TH AND 12TH GRADE 
STUDENTS. Students may submit poetry (a group of 3 poems), fiction (a 
short story or one-act play) or nonfiction (a personal or academic 
essay).  First place: $500; Second place: $250.  Submission forms are 
available in D221 or at www.bennington.edu under “News & Events.” 
Postmark deadline: November 1.

FOR SENIORS
*If you are applying Early Action or Early Decision to any colleges and 
have not yet turned in your envelopes so that we can mail your 
counselor recommendation, please see Ms. Abrams or Ms. Harris in the 
College/Career Center immediately.

*Get help with your college essay or personal statement!  Beginning 
next week, there will be essay readers available in D221 every day from 
8:00 to 9:00 am and at lunch time and on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 
after school.  These readers are a great help and give you a new 
perspective on your essay.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Gates Millennium Scholarship – open to students who are African 
American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander or Hispanic American, 
are a US citizen or permanent resident, have a minimum unweighted GPA 
of 3.3, will be enrolling at a US college or university as a full time 
freshman student, demonstrated leadership, and is meets the federal 
eligibility requirements for a Pell grant.  The scholarship pays the 
entire cost of an undergraduate education.  Deadline:  January 12 – but 
start early as you must get a nomination and a recommendation and fill 
out a lengthy application.
