STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
September 28, 2006

Administration
*1. BHS exit exams is next week.  Letters are being mailed home to students
who need to take them.  Tuesday, October 3 for English and Wednesday,
October 4 for Math.  8:30 am in the library for both exams.

*2. Back to school night is tonight.  Please bring your child’s schedule
with you to make it easier for you to follow the class switches.

*3. Yom Kippur is the Holiest Day of the Jewish year. Yom Kippur commences
Sunday evening, October 1st at sundown.  It concludes Monday Night,
October 2nd at Sundown.

4. Did you know that Breakfast is free each day at BHS.  Stop by the Food
court for a healthy breakfast each morning in the food court.  Also,
starting tomorrow the Food Court will open a snack bar for healthy snacks
and drinks throughout the day.  Open from 7am to 2pm.  These items are for
sale.

5. Celebrate your freedom to read this week during Banned Books Week!
Come to the library to see the display of titles that have been challenged
in schools and libraries.  Fill out a slip to guess why people have
objected to these books.

6. Attention all sophomores and juniors: sign ups for the PSAT will begin
on Wednesday, September 27th and will continue through Friday, October 6th
at lunch and after school until 4 PM at the D building ticket window on
Allston way.  The fee for the test is $22.00 cash or money order payable
to Berkeley High School.  The test is on Saturday, October 21st, 8 AM, here at
Berkeley High.

7. Math tutoring with Mr. Willson on Mondays and Tuesdays 3:15 to
4:30 PM in H109.

8. BHS 2006 Spirit Week is October 16-20th! Suggestions for Spirit
days and to sign up to participate in your class Rally dance, stop by
D148 to submit your suggestions.

9. Need homework help?  Go to the Student Learning Center in D221.

10. This was a fantastic start to the season!  Join Math Works and get
Community Service and Tutoring hours- be a Math Mentor!  We need
volunteers to work with Willard Middle School 6th graders on Tuesdays and

*11. Job openings:
*(a) TARGET IS hiring.  See the Admin office for application.  We have the
application and all the information for job openings.
*(b) After school office job for reliable student with some computer skills
(MAC is best), assisting in a home office of a local musician and
community activist.  2-3 hours a week.  Call Betsy Rose at 525-7082.
(c) Berkeley Public Library is hiring 5 student workers.  These jobs
involve assisting teen services librarians in a variety of tasks and
working with library materials.  The application period ends on
September 30, 2006.  Call Kay at 510-981-6135 or email

(d) Albany Physical Therapy is looking for a student to work
approximately six hours per week (two hours per day, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday) to help with office responsibilities.  They offer flexible
hours and job training.  Wages: $6.75 per hour.  For more

Clubs

*1.  Come to French Club!  It begins this Friday at lunch in room C102.
We'll kick off the year with a French movie.  Everyone's welcome.

2. Seniors!  Bring your summer weekend and baby pictures to be
featured in the Berkeley High yearbooks.  Pictures must be labeled
with your full name and be in self addressed stamped envelope in
order to get them back.  You can bring prints  or a CD with high
resolution pictures to the main office.  Deadline to turn photos in
is October 27th--firm!

Sports

*1. Invitation to apply for the Dan Wyche Scholarship Fund to support one
teen membership to a local gym each year.  The award is for $350.00 and
can be applied towards membership at the Y, at 24 hour Fitness, or at
Mavericks Sports in Emeryville.  All teens, ages 14-18, are encouraged to
apply.  Applications are due by Oct. 15.  Interviews held Nov. 6-9.
Announcement will be Nov. 17.  For application information contact Jo Ann

2. Come play for the Berkeley High Ultimate Frisbee Team.  Everyone's
welcome.  Freshman through Seniors, boys and girls.  Tryouts are after
school, Friday, October 6th from 4 to 6.  Don't miss it.

3. All girls interested in playing club softball this fall may
contact Coach Run Hunt at 1-800-826-9950 or come out to practice
every Wednesday and Friday from 4-6 PM at Grove Park. We also
practice on Monday 10/2, 10/23, and 10/30.  All girls are encouraged
to come out and play ball.

Senior / Junior Section

*1. Gates Millennium Scholarship- open to students who are African
American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander, are a  US citizen or
permanent resident, have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.3., will be
enrolling at a US College or university as a full time freshman student,
demonstrated leadership, and meets the federal eligibility requirements
for a Pell grant.  The scholarship pays the entire cost of an
undergraduate education.  Deadline:  January 12th,  but start early as you
must get a nomination and a recommendation and fill out a lengthy
application.

2. ESSAY Writing workshops:  You must sign up in D221 to attend.
October 5, 7:30 PM in the College Career Center.

3. High School seniors who are exceptional in the arts are encouraged
to apply for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts
renowned Arts Recognition and Talent Search, which rewards
scholarships of up to $10,000.  The program rewards students
nationwide in various categories: dance, film and video, and many
more.  The deadline is October 2nd. Students can register online at
[http://www.nfaa.artsawards.org] or call 1(800)970-2787.  Last year
two students won scholarships--apply now!  Scholarships range from
$500 to $10,000.

4. College visits to Berkeley High- Seniors: Sign up in D221 to
attend college presentations. You must also pick up an authorization
form for your teacher to sign so that you may miss his or her class.

5. College Information Day: Saturday, September 30 from 8:30 to 1:00
at UC Berkeley Wheeler Hall. Over 60 public and private college
university representatives will be available to speak with you about
their colleges.

6. CSF Community service - if you want to join CSF, three hours of
community service and $15 of fundraising are required.  The community
service hours cannot substitute or overlap with math class tutoring.
The deadline to complete your community service hours is January 24,

Events/ Performance

1. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!  It's party time at BHS. You have your classes,
books, and homework, so school is definite back in session.  So you might
as well celebrate.  Come to the Back to School Dance, Friday night after
the Richmond vs. Berkeley High Football game. Pay $10 and get a ticket to
both events.  Tickets are on sale everyday at lunch and after school in
the Allston Way Box office.  BHS student only!

Sales

*1. Last day to order BART tickets is today at lunchtime only.  No orders
will be taken after lunch.

2. Letter jacket sales go on every lunch and immediately after school
in the athletic office during the last week of September and the
first week of October.  Jackets are available for sizing.  Letters
and insignias may be purchased directly from the athletic office.
Anyone may purchase a jacket, but you must have earned an athletic
letter in order to purchase one.  Jackets are available in red w/
cream or black w/ black sleeves.  Price includes your name and all
insignias sewn in. Approximate cost is $170 per jacket.
