SAT WORD OF THE DAY: LEXICON - a dictionary; a specialized vocabulary
used in a particular field or place.  Having grown up in the inner
city, Shawn was familiar with the lexicon of the streets. 

JOB OPENINGS
California Youth Energy Services - Summer job to educate adults about
ways to conserve energy and water.  No soliciting involved.  Begins
June 26 for 7 weeks.  Earn $9/hour. Applications available in D221.

SENIORS
INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN HEALTH CARE? - On Wednesday, May 24 at 1:20
p.m. (5th period) a representative from the Berkeley Adult School
will let students know about the Certified Nurse Assistant and Home
Health Aide (CNA/HHA) training program starting up again in the Fall
of 2006 at the Berkeley Adult School.  Come to D221 to sign up.  

*THURSDAY, MAY 25, COMMUNITY COLLEGE DAY - Come speak with
representatives from many local community colleges, ask questions
about programs, admissions, orientation and class registration.  All
presentations will be held in the College/Career Center.  Sign up in
advance to attend one or more presentations: 

Diablo Valley College - First period
Laney College - Second period
College of Alameda - Third period
Vista College - Fifth period

*Friday, May 26 - Last day to turn in your Senior Awards Ceremony
form in Room D221. This ceremony recognizes you for the honors and
scholarships you have received during your high school years.  It is
a wonderful way for you to get the acknowledgement you deserve and
celebrate with many others from the class of '06.  

*Tuesday, May 30 - Last day to turn in the Senior Exit Report in
D221.  The information contained in these reports is very important
so that we can have accurate data of the future plans of all seniors
and assess how Berkeley High is doing in college admissions.  No
information on an individual student will be shared without the
student's permission.  If you want your future plans listed in the
senior edition of the Jacket, you must let us know on the form.

Friday, June 2 - Last day for students to turn in a Transcript
Request Form to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that we can send an official
transcript to the school you will be attending in the fall.  Write
"FINAL TRANSCRIPT" in capital letters across the top of the form and
paperclip it to a stamped business size envelope addressed to the
college, with Berkeley High School (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley 94704)
as the return address.  If you are under 18, please remember to have
your parent or guardian sign the request form.  All colleges require
that students send them a final transcript confirming their senior
year grades.

If you are getting below a C in any of your classes and are planning
to attend a four year college in the fall, you MUST contact the
college to discuss this.  All colleges will receive a copy of your
final transcript.  By contacting the college and discussing your
options with them, you may be able to prevent your admission from
being rescinded.  Please see me if you would like to discuss your
grades or what to say to the college.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Are you a low income senior who did not get enough money in your
financial aid package to meet your full need?  You can apply for the
Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship and win up to a $3,800 scholarship
that is renewable each year.  Scholarship is open to students who are
US citizens or permanent residents, have a family adjusted gross
income for 2005 of $30,000 or less, have unmet financial need of at
least $1,000 and a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.5.

Students attending UC Berkeley next year - apply for the Charlie
Cords Memorial Scholarship.  Award:  $2,000.  Apply at

Nancy Elizabeth Branch 2006 African-American Scholarship - Open to
African-American seniors planning to attend a four year college.
Applications available in D221.  Scholarship:  $1,000.  Deadline:
May 31.  

Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Scholarship - Scholarships awarded on
the basis of scholastic achievement, financial need, citizenship,
leadership, service and employment. Parent must be a member of the
Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. $1,000.  Deadline:  June 15.   

FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS 
College Presentations
May 22 - Representatives from Haverford, Colorado College, Kenyon,
Connecticut College, Claremont McKenna, Macalester, Sarah Lawrence
and Grinnell will host an informational meeting at the Westin SF
Airport, 1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae starting at 7:00 p.m.  

*JUNIORS - The UC pamphlet, Introducing the University, has arrived.
Pick yours up in the College Center to get information on each UC
campus, including admissions, majors, financial aid and important
contact information.  

Princeton Review is offering a free full-length practice SAT in
Berkeley on July 8th.  There is a free follow up SAT Strategy
Sessions in Berkeley on  July 12th.  There is also a free full-length
practice PSAT in Berkeley on September 2nd.  To register, students

ALL STUDENTS
Want to learn programming and game creation this summer?  Join the
Information Technology Leadership Program (ITLP), a year-round
program for high school students that meets for two weeks in August
and then once per month during the school year.  This year's summer
institute will be held July 31-August 11 at UC Berkeley.  Priority is
given to African American, Chicano/Latino, Fiipino, Native American
and/or young women who are interested in computer science or
engineering.  Cost:  Free.  Students must have completed Algebra 1
with a grade of C or better and have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  June 1.

Summer Reading Skills Program - sponsored by Cal State East Bay,
these classes are available for students of all grades.  Classes
offered in Berkeley and Oakland.  Information available in D221 or by
calling 1-800-978-3532.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Volunteer opportunity - The Museum of Children's Art in Oakland is
seeking High School students interested in working with younger
children (ages 5-12) for Art Apprentice positions at its Summer Art
Camp.  Art Apprentice teens work to assist the Art teachers and will
be responsible for helping campers to create fun art projects.
Experience in both art and leadership important but not required.
Commitment is a minimum of 2 weeks (with flexibility throughout the
summer) and one day of training prior to camp.  There are both
morning shifts and afternoon shifts available.  Some stipend payments
to outstanding Apprentices may be awarded.  For more information call

BACKSTAGE is an apprentice/counselor-in-training program for
teenagers in 9th through 12th grade. Each counselor/apprentice will
be asked to select a specific focus, such as choreography, stage and
set design, music, costuming, stage management or direction. Students
will assist with our programs, and receive direct "behind-the-scenes"
experience in both theater and the day-to-day aspects of camp life.
Each apprentice is scheduled for two to nine weeks of service, and
receives a small stipend. He or she will be actively engaged in our
production, and gain pre-vocational training in their area of focus.
Apprentices are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 daily, and must
undergo a separate application process, including an interview. Call
