Teacher Mike Vaughn is looking for two adults who can accompany his
10th grade English glass to SFMOMA Friday, June 2nd. He has
planned a wonderful trip but it will not happend unless he comes up
with two volunteerss. This is a great opportunity to help a good
group of kids AND, bonus, visit a world class museum.

Mr. Vaughn writes... "We would met at BHS at the start of second
period, walk to the Berkeley BART station and then walk to the museum
from Montgomery (they say it is closer than Powell). We plan on
getting there when they open (10 am), and see what we can for about
two hours, then have lunch in the park across the street. I'll bring
a Frisbee & football, so the kids can "blow off some energy". We
will bring our brown bag lunch (I'll make some sandwiches for a those
students who would be getting a free lunch anyway.) Then head back
inside after about 40 minutes for about another hour.

"The goal is to ask for about five predetermined pieces: what is the
artist trying to say? Did he or she do the job? How did the artists
communicate to you?" The student should then spend time with ANY art
piece of their choice, and then write about it (outline) then and
there. They will have to then write up their choice in an essay.

"These are great kids, kind and insightful. I have always gotten big
smiles when I have said I want to do this. I would be so disappointed
if we could not go (they would too.) This will directly tie into what
we have been doing in class. As an actor who has fallen into teaching
English, I have been talking about the writer as another artist of
the times, who has reacted to both the other art of his generation,
and the politics of his times."
