Administration
1. Attention all candidates for the 2006-2007 student government
elections. The deadline to submit your completed application and the
deadline to change your intended position is this Friday, May 5th,
2006.
2. BHS Jazz Ensemble won first place in the AAAA Division at the 44th
Annual Reno Jazz Festival on Friday, April 28th. The combo won first
and third in the AA Combo Division. The Jazz Lab Band II received an
excellent rating and Billy Boss Best Trumpet Award. Congrats to all
band members for a job well done.
3. Congratulations to the Berkeley High School Mountain Bike Club for
taking second place overall in the highly competitive Norcal High
school Mountain Bike Racing series! With thirty-two club members, the
team competed in five races this season and had numerous top three
finishes in most racing categories. Big cheers for senior Russell
Hilken for wearing the varsity boys leader jersey and to junior Rebecca
Rogers and sophomore Traci Kroll for placing second overall in the
junior varsity and frosh/soph girls categories, respectively.
4. More than half of all people will have a STI (Sexually transmitted
infection) at one point in their lifetime (American Social Health
Association, 2006). The BHS Health Center offers free and confidential
STI testing. Don’t wait. Get tested now. Brought to you by the BHS
Health Center Youth Advisory Board.
5. AP TEST- today, Thursday, May 4, in the Jacket Gym
7:30 am English Literature
12:00 pm German Language
6. STUDENTS: There are no water fights allowed on BHS campus. Water
balloons, water guns, water bottles, or any other object filled with
water will get you automatically suspended for three days. Seniors:
Remember, if caught in water play you will not be able to participate
in graduation ceremonies.
7. Need help with a writing assignment? Writer’s Cafe has moved to the
library for its last four sessions. We have writing coaches available
to help you brainstorm, organize, or polish your work. Come today from
11:30 am to 12:10 pm.
8. ESSAY CONTEST! Children’s Aid and Relief Enterprise invites all
Berkeley High students to participate in an essay contest. This paper
should be double-spaced, 12 font and no more than -3 pages in length.
Essays must be submitted by May 5th. You can email
<berkeley at yahoo.com> or mail it to CARE Berkeley, 2521 Regent St Apt
#14, Berkeley, CA 94704. The grand prize winner will receive $50 gift
certificate to Amoeba Music. For more information on the topic see
Belinda McDaniel in the front office.
Clubs
1. Want to represent Latino culture? Do you sing? Dance? Do spoken
word? Come audition for the LaRaza Latino Awareness assembly. May 4th
at lunchtime in Ms. Room C124.
2. The absolutely, definite, without a doubt, last day to turn in an
application to become a student lawyer for the Berkeley High Student
Court is Friday, May 5th. You can pick one up and return it outside of
C311.
3. ELL Students: If you would like to help make the ELL Yearbook
please come to a meeting in Ms. Isaksen’s room during lunch on
Thursday. If you have any questions you may ask Raul or Gisselle in
C107.
Sports
1. Congratulations to the BHS Swim team. They went undefeated in all
league dual meets this season and defeated Alameda in the last dual
meet of the year. The boys 110-76 win over Alameda was their first in
18 years. The divers will compete in the league championship this
Thursday and the swimmers compete next Saturday at Contra Costa
College. Finalists will compete in the North Coast Section
Championships the following weekend. Go Jackets!
2. Congratulations to the Boys Golf Team. Their second place finish in
last Friday’s league tournament at Metropolitan qualified them for the
NCS event next Monday, May 8. John Hasse was the highest individual
score in the entire tournament! Good luck in the next round of play.
3. Open gym volleyball is available on Thursdays 4:30 – 5:30 in the
Donahue Gym on 5/11, 5 18, 5/25, 6/1. Open gym is available to all
Berkeley High Girls.
4. Football meeting: Anyone interested in participating in Spring
football practices. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend. We
will be discussing spring football events and what is expected of you
in the fall. Thursday, May 4th at 3:30 pm in G210.
Senior / Junior Section
1. College Visits:
UC Berkeley: May 10th at 1:20 pm UC Berkeley summer session-find out
about interesting
classes to improve your skills and GPA over the summer. Sign up in
D221 to come to the presentation.
2. Juniors- There are now many openings for appointments with either
Ms. Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow. If you have not already had an
appointment or missed a previous one, sign up now in D221 before they
are gone.
3. Scholarships- Greater San Francisco Advertising Club Scholarship
Program-Open to seniors who plan to study advertising communications,
design, journalism, marketing or media. Applications available in D221.
Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Deadline: May 5th.
4. Nancy Elizabeth Branch 2006 African American Scholarship- Open to
African-American seniors planning to attend a four year college.
Applications available in D221. Scholarship: $1,000. Deadline: May
31st.
5. Seniors- Full time summer jobs available with the Social Security
Administration, 1221 Nevin Avenue, Richmond, across from the Richmond
BART station. Pay $11.34 per hour. Low income students are given
priority for employment. Applications available in D221.
6. Seniors! Our time here at Berkeley High School has almost come to
an end. Graduation is around the corner! Do you want to be a part of
the show? Are you a speaker, artist, or dancer? Come to the try out
on May 9 and 10th starting 6th period in the Community Theater. Sign
up with Ruby at the front desk. Have something creative prepared. We
want to see all your diverse talents. Be there!
7. Seniors! Seniors! Need a little extra ends? Well the register of
voters is in need of Poll Workers in your local area to assist with
polling place set-up and check in. The pay is a whopping $90. See
Mrs. McKnight for more information.
8. JOB OPENINGS- MTC Summer High School Internship program open to
students at least 16 years old who have completed the 10th grade and
has a GPA of 2.9 or above. 25 internships available throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area. Salary: $8.25 per hour. Students may work full or
part-time for up to 8 weeks between June and August 2005. Applications
available in D221 or at <www.mtc.ca.gov>.
Events/ Performance
1. If you want to record your music--rap, beats, or string quartets--
you can come to the CAS sound studio for complete professional support
from our professional student engineers. Cut your own CD! If you are
interested, see Mr. Ayers in room C324 to sign up.
2. Opera Club! If you are interested in getting incredibly cheap ($30)
tickets to the SF Opera and seeing world class performances, check
this. Attend Madam Butterfly by Puccini on May 30 (Tuesday). Space is
limited so purchase your ticket now! See Mr. Ayers in C324.

1. Yearbooks are on sale in H102 everyday at lunch and after school.
They are $70 dollars. Make checks payable to BHS yearbooks.
2. COUPON BOOKS-Stop by Milvia Street exits and get your copy of “Guide
to the Good Life in Berkeley.” For just $10, you get hundreds of
coupons that can save you hundreds of dollars – at places like Extreme
Pizza, Crepes A Go Go , and Grub and Go, LaVal’s, Games of Berkeley and
Iceland. All proceeds go to support Berkeley Schools! And many many
