College Advisor's Bulletin

SAT WORD OF THE DAY: AVARICE – greed.  Some fans feel that avarice has 
become the motivating influence in professional sports, rather than 
love of the game or desire to excel.

SENIORS – There are many scholarships available in the College Center 
and few of you are applying.  Please come by to check these out and 
apply for FREE MONEY!!! A complete list of all of the scholarship 
applications who have available can be found in the College Center or 
at www.bhs.berkeley.k12.ca.us/services/collegecenter.html, then click 
on “scholarships” from the drop down box.

EVENTS
*Minorities in Health: Fostering Diversity.  This conference is open to 
all minorities, disadvantaged students, undergraduates, and high school 
students who are interested in the health care professions.
You will have the opportunity to hear speakers from diverse 
backgrounds, learn more about what it takes to be a competitive 
applicant for professional health schools, and speak with 
representatives from medical and public health schools.  This is a 
wonderful opportunity to meet students, physicians and other practicing 
professionals who have overcome extreme academic and personal 
challenges and share in their journey to a fulfilling and rewarding 
career in health.  Event capped at 200 attendees. Sunday April 23rd, 
9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., 2050 Valley Life Science Building on the 
University of California, Berkeley campus.  Registration and the entire 
event is free of cost. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Wheelchair

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Lambda Theta Nu Sorority 2006 Latina Scholarship Fund – Applicant must 
be a female graduating senior of Latino heritage who is planning to 
attend an accredited two or four year college or technical school.  
Deadline:  May 5

*NorCal Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 
– Open to high school seniors in Northern California who are interested 
in a career in chemical engineering.  $250 each year for four years.  
Applications available in D221.  Received deadline:  May 1.

Wa Sung Community Service Club – Scholarship for graduating high school 
senior of Asian descent currently residing in Alameda or Contra Costa 
County who will be attending college in the fall.  Winners must attend 
the Wa Sung Merit Awards ceremony on Sunday, May 21.  7-12 scholarships 
of $1,000 each will be awarded.  Deadline:  April 17.

Lillian Pierce Benbow Scholarship – Scholarship for African-American 
seniors who are planning to attend a four year college, have a minimum 
GPA of 3.0 and financial need.  $1,000 each.  Deadline:  April 28.

Two scholarships for African-American females.  The Olga Jane Lewis 
Scholarship requires a 3.5 unweighted GPA.  The Ida Louise Jackson 
Scholarship requires a 3.0 GPA. Each one is for $1,000.  Deadline:  
April 21.

Vietnam Veterans Group of San Quentin – Scholarships open to graduating 
seniors who either have a parent or legal guardian currently serving in 
the Armed Forces or was honorably discharged from the Armed Forces.  
Two scholarships available - $1,500 and $750.  Deadline:  May 5.

Chinese American Citizens Alliance – Scholarship for Chinese American 
senior. Essay and application required.  In addition, the winner must 
attend the award dinner on June 10.  Nine scholarships of $800 each.  
Deadline:  April 10.

East Bay Consortium of Educational Institutions Scholarship – Thirty 
$2,500 scholarships will be awarded for students attending four year 
college, nineteen $1,000 scholarships for students attending community 
colleges and six $1,000 scholarships for students attending community 
colleges. Must be a graduating senior who will be attending a four year 
accredited college or university, or a community college or a 
vocational/technical school.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 
if attending a four year school or a minimum 2.0 if attending a 
community college or vocational school, active participation in 
extracurricular activities and financial need.  Applications available 
in D221. Deadline:  April 21.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES –April 3 is the regular registration deadline for 
the May 6 SAT.  May 5 is the regular registration deadline for the June 
10 ACT.  Students may register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com or 
for the ACT at www.act.org.  There are also paper registration 
applications for both tests available in D221.

ALL STUDENTS
*Kaiser Permanente is seeking high school students between the ages of 
16 and 20 for their LAUNCH High School Summer Youth Employment Program. 
  Job goes from June 19-August 11 and includes four hour weekly 
educational sessions.  Applications available in D221.

SUMMER JOBS – Summer camp jobs at Cal Youth and Outdoor Programs at UC 
Berkeley.  Apply online at 222.oski.org and click on “Employment.”  Job 
openings for counselors and instructors in a wide variety of sports, 
community service, backpacking, etc.  For more information, call

Summer writing workshops – Classroom Matters is offering a Summer 
Intensive Writing Program through workshops and seminars.  April 14-24, 
three hours per day, Monday-Thursday.   Students may choose either the 
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or the 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. session. Tuition:  
$450.  Some scholarships are available.  For more information, call

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Faces for the Future Summer Medical Academy at Children’s Hospital – 
open to students 15 years and older who are genuinely interested in 
becoming physicians.  The program includes two weeks of activities that 
allow students to experience what it’s like to be a medical student and 
doctor.  Cost: $1,500, includes breakfast and lunch.  July 10-21, 9am
