SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PERVASIVE - widespread; extremely common.  The
effects of illiteracy worldwide are quite pervasive: one billion
people are incapacitated by the inability to read.

I will be away from school all day today on college visits.

*Ms. Harris will be out the following dates and times.  I am looking
for volunteers for the following shifts to cover her desk.  Please let
me know if you are available to be in the College Center any of these
dates and times.
Friday, March 10 -  12-1 and 2-4
Monday, March 20 - 8:00-10:30, 10:30-1:00, 2:00-4:00

URGENT - Volunteers are still needed for the Berkeley High Career
Fair, Thursday, March 9, for the following shifts:
9:30-noon - 1 more volunteers needed
12-2 - 2 more volunteers needed
2-4 - 3 more volunteers needed
4-6 - 2 more volunteers needed
Last year hundreds of students attended the fair to get information on
careers, jobs, training and hear how to write resumes, prepare for job
interviews and "dress for success."  We've expanded this year's fair
to include presentations in the theater.  It's parents like you who
help make the fair a success.  Please e-mail me if you are available.

Monday, March 13
9:30 a.m.  Cal State Fresno program on Medical Physics.  This talk
will focus on the growing field of biomedical physics and the career
opportunities.

Tuesday, March 14
1:20 and 2:20  Cal State East Bay onsite admissions in D221  Bring an
official transcript.

Students of Color Health Careers Conference - If you are a student of
color currently enrolled in a local high school and interested in a
career in health care, come to this free conference to get information
on career choices, financial aid, academic survival techniques and
more.   Saturday, March 11, 9:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Clark Kerr
Campus of UC Berkeley.  Registration forms available in D221.

*Los Medanos College is starting a new series called the Occupational
Education Sampler, which will consist of 3 hour presentations about
career opportunities in six different fields. The presentations will
be held on Saturdays as follows:
March 25 - Computer Science and CNT
April 1 - Child Development
April 8 -  Nursing
April 29 - Appliance Service and Welding Technology
May 6 - EMS and Firefighting
May 13 - Business

SCHOLARSHIPS
East Bay Consortium of Educational Institutions Scholarship - Thirty
$2,500 scholarships will be awarded for students attending four year
college, nineteen $1,000 scholarships for students attending community
colleges and six $1,000 scholarships for students attending community
colleges. Must be a graduating senior who will be attending a four
year accredited college or university, or a community college or a
vocational/technical school.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
if attending a four year school or a minimum 2.0 if attending a
community college or vocational school, active participation in
extracurricular activities and financial need.  Applications available
in D221. Deadline:  April 21.

Tzu Chi Foundation Scholarship - Seniors are selected based on
financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.
Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0. $1,000 scholarship.  Deadline:  March
31.

Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Scholarship For Social Justice -
Graduating senior who plans to attend two or four year college next
year who has participated in work to further the cause of social
justice, has financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Applications
available in D221.  Received Deadline:  March 30 at 4:00 p.m. in D221.

Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - $5,000 scholarship,
renewable for three additional years, to graduating senior with a
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 who has participated in community
service and has financial need.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline: March 31.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - March 8 is the late registration deadline for the
April 1 SAT.
March 17 is the late registration deadline for the April 8 ACT.

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest - sponsored by LA con IV, the 64th
World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.
Students enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme,
original artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science
essay.  Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:
March 31.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project Summer Conference.  Open to
current 10th and 11th graders, the conference will take place at
Sacramento State University from July 29-August 5.  The conference is
free to students who are selected.  Applications are available in D221
and online at www.clylp.com.  Deadline:  March 22.

Lawrence Hall of Science is sponsoring two residential research camps
for students in grades 9-12.  Wildlife Biology Research Camp at
Sagehen Research Station, July 30-August 4.  Marine Biology Research
Camp at Bodega Marine Lab, June 17-22.  Applications available in
