College Advisor's Bulletin

SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CONTRITE – feeling regret for having committed 
some wrongdoing.  The contrite child wished she had never played 
baseball near the greenhouse.

The College/Career Center, D221, will be closed for ninth grade ILP's 
during the following days and times.  Only proctors assigned to the 
College Center and students who have appointments with Ms. Abrams or 
Mr. Stringfellow may come during these times.  The College Center will 
be open every day at lunch and after sixth period.

Wednesday, February 22, periods 4 through 6

*NOTE TO JUNIORS
I realize that many of you were not able to sign up for an appointment 
with me or Mr. Stringfellow for the months of February and March.  You 
are welcome to drop by to see one of us any day at lunch or after 
school for short meetings to get your questions answered.  You do not 
need an appointment for these drop-in times.  I will also be posting 
new sign-up sheets in mid-March for the months of April and May.  I 
will announce the date that the sheets will be posted in the bulletin 
and I will send notices to all junior English teachers.  We look 
forward to seeing you.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Responsible student assistant needed to work at Lawrence Berkeley 
Laboratory for 9-10 hours per week, times are flexible.  Knowledge of 
Microsoft Word and Excel is recommended.  Free shuttle from downtown 
Berkeley BART to the lab.  Salary: $7.25 per hour.  Call Susan

The Pasta Shop is looking for seniors to work on weekends at 1786 
Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Pick up an application at the store and ask

Student needed for filing and organizing two to six hours per week in 
Albany on the 43 bus line.  Times are flexible.  $7.50 per hour

King Middle School Afterschool ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish 
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 
and from 2:15-3:15 on Wednesday.  We'll also hire monolingual 
English-speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school 
students.  You must be in 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on 
time!  Pay:  $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, Room 7 and ask 
for Patricia Rathwell or Akemi Hamai, or call 644-4811.

FOR SENIORS
*STILL NEED HELP FILLING OUT YOUR FAFSA?  Cash for College events -- 
where you can get one-on-one assistance, get help with free tax 
preparation, and contend for a $1,000 scholarship – will be held as 
follows.  Remember to bring all of your income information from 2005.

FAFSA Workshops at Berkeley High
Bring your financial information and your questions.  Trained 
assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill out the 
financial aid forms.  All workshops are in the Berkeley High School 
library computer lab.

Want to be a chef? Would you like to work in hotel management? The 
Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program of City College of San 
Francisco is now accepting applications for Fall 2006.  For more

SCHOLARSHIPS
Berkeley Rotary Scholarship – Senior with financial need, academic 
potential, and involved in extracurricular activities.  Applications 
available in D221.  Awards:  Up to $5,000, renewable for four years.  
Deadline:  March 16 (received date).

Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship - Female senior of Chicana/Latina 
background with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or four 
year institution after graduation and has financial need. U.S. 
Citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a requirement. Applications 
available in D221. $250 scholarship. Deadline:  April 1.

Richard S. Navies Scholarship – Seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal 
residents, graduating from a Bay Area high school with a minimum GPA of 
2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two years.  Students 
should also have volunteered in school or community organizations. 
Award:  $2,500. Deadline:  March 17.

Gill Scholarship – For Berkeley High seniors who have financial need.  
Essay and letters of recommendation required.  $1,000 scholarship 
renewable for three additional years of college.  Deadline:  April 6.

Berkeley Community Fund – Open only to Berkeley High seniors planning 
to attend two or four year college in the fall who have financial need 
and academic excellence.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  
March 6 – must be received at the Fund by March 6 at 5:00 p.m.

Pick up a list of all of the available scholarships in D221.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES – February 24 is the regular registration deadline 
for the April 1 SAT.   March 3 is the regular registration deadline for 
the April 8 ACT.

Scholarship – Elder & Leemaur Publishers “University Writing 
Scholarship”.   Write an essay on one of three topics.  Up to $10,000 
award.  Topics are available in D221 or at

March 1.

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest – sponsored by LA con IV, the 64th 
World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.  Students 
enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme, original 
artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science essay.  
Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:  March 31.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Constitutional Rights Foundation’s Summer Law Institute - Open to 
current 9th, 10th and 11th graders who are interested in learning more 
about the American legal system.  Students live on the UCLA campus 
during the institute from July 30-August 5.  Cost: $1,200, need based 
scholarships are available.  For more information, contact Katie Moore
