Administration
1. NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20 -- Presidents' Day Holiday
2. The BHS BSEP committee funds of all types of student enrichment
programs with money provided by the BSEP Tax Measure of 1994. BSEP
program proposal application forms are now available for the fall 2006.
You can pick them up from Belinda McDaniel in the Admin office or call
her
at 644-4800. The forms can also be sent electronically.
3. Berkeley High School Jazz Lab Band II auditions (intermediate level)
for fall 06 will be held in A 201.
--Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 3:15 p.m.: saxophone, rhythm section, piano,
guitar, trumpet
--Thursday, Feb. 23, at 3:15 p.m.: trombone.

4. King Middle School After-school ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish
bilingual tutors who can work from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday
and Thursday, and
from 2:15 - 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. We’ll also hire monolingual English
speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school students.
You must be in the 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King on time.
Pay: $9.00 / hour. Come to the Science Room 7 and ask for Patricia
Rathwell or Mrs. Hamai. You may also call 644-4811.
5. Responsible student assistant needed to work at Lawrence Berkeley
Laboratory for 9-10 hours per week, times are flexible. Knowledge of
Micropsoft Word and Excel is recommended. Free shuttle from downtown
Berkeley BART to the lab. Salary $7.25 per hour. Call Susan Macalester
at 510-486-5683 for more information and application.
Clubs
1. There will be an informal gathering of students interested in joining
an Ultimate Frisbee Club at BHS. We will gather at Cordinices Park this
Friday at 12:00 Noon. Bring Soccer cleats if you have them. If it’s
raining we’ll reschedule. Questions see Mr. Fike.
2. The Reach Out and Read Club is having a book drive! Reading at a
young
age is important and we can help! Donations will be given to Children’s
Hospital Oakland to be read and distributed to children when they visit.
From Feb. 15 - Mar. 15, please bring in any picture books,
children’s books, or teen books to your 2nd period class. The class
with
the most books at the end of the month will win a pizza party!
Sports
None
Senior / Junior Section
1. Seniors: It’s time to purchase your SENIOR PAGES. A single page is
$200 and a double page is $400. Come by the Yearbook room H102
after school! The deadline to purchase is February 24th. Limited
amount
of pages, so hurry!
2. UPCOMING Presentations: All presentations in D221. Sign up in D221
and
get an authorization form for your teacher to sign prior to the
presentation.
3. FAFSA Workshops: Bring your financial information and your questions.
Trained assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill
out
the financial aid forms. All workshops are in the Berkeley High School
library computer lab:

4. Seniors: Want to be a chef? Would you like to work in a hotel
management? The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program of
City
College of San Francisco is now accepting applications for Fall 2006.

5. Scholarships: Richard S. Navies Scholarship-seniors who are US
citizens
or legal residents, graduating from a Bay Area High School with a
minimum
GPA of 2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two years.
Students should also have volunteered in school or community
organizations. Award: $2,500 or deadline: March 17.
6. Sigma Pi Alpha Scholarship- Female senior of Chicano/ Latina
background
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or four year
institution after graduation and has financial need. US citizenship or
permanent residency is NOT a requirement. Application available in
D221.
$250 scholarship. Deadline: April 1.
7. Ligurians in the World Association – A graduating senior who has at
least one parent of Italian descent $1,000 scholarship. Application
available in D221. Deadline: April 15.
8. For Juniors-KRON 4 Students Rising Above Scholarship. This is a
scholarship for students who will graduate from high school and then
attend college in 2007. Students must be from low income families who
are
rising above great difficulties and succeeding in school and in life.
Applications are available in D221. Applications must be received by
KRON
by Tuesday, April 4.
9. California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS)
is
now accepting applications. COSMOS is now enrolling students at four
sites-UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz. Tuition, room and
board
is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for qualified students.
The COSMOS course clusters address topics not traditionally taught in
high
schools such as astronomy, aerospace engineering, biomedical sciences,
computer science, wetlands ecology, ocean science, robotics, game
theory,
and more. The program runs from July 9 – August 5.

Deadline is March 16 at 5:00 p.m.
10. Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award -Graduating
African-American female with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need
who
is planning to attend a four year college or university. Scholarships
range from $500 to $2,000. Deadline: April 1.
Events/ Performance
1. Don’t forget BHS Poetry Slam, Wednesday, February 21st at 7pm in the
library. New location… $1 to get in. Poets sign up at 6:30 p.m.
Judges
are taken from the audience. We go through one round of 20 poets, and
then the top 3 to 5 contestants go to a second round.
2. Wanted: Readers! Sign up to participate in the California Young
Reader
Medal event at the Berkeley Public Library. Come to the Berkeley High
Library to get a flyer of how to participate.
3. Come see the 11th Annual Independent Theater Projects! ITPs is
completely student run theater group based at Berkeley High. Every
year,
ITPs puts on a night of theater that dares to push the envelope and go
where traditional high school drama fears to tread. Over the years,
ITPS
has garnered a reputation of professionalism and excellence and this
year
is no exception of professionalism and excellence and this year is no
exception. Come support your talented friends and classmates.

4. In celebration of African American History Month, come hear two
renowned celebrities in the Berkeley High Library Wednesday, February
22,
at 7:00 p.m. Morrie Turner, creator of Wee Pals, the first syndicated
multi
ethnic cartoon, graduated from Berkeley High and makes his home here.
Karen McKie, storyteller extraordinaire, has been an active participant
in
the Berkeley High School community. This event is jointly sponsored by
the African American Studies department, the Black Student Union and
Berkeley High Library. Bring the whole family!

2. Yearbooks are on sale in H102 everyday at lunch and after school.
They
are $70 dollars. Make checks payable to BHS yearbooks.
