SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PERNICIOUS - destructive; deadly.  The
pernicious plague wiped out half of the country's population.  

The College/Career Center, D221, will be closed for ninth grade ILP's
during the following days and times.  Only proctors assigned to the
College Center and students who have appointments with Ms. Abrams or
Mr. Stringfellow may come during these times.  The College Center
will be open every day at lunch and after sixth period.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Responsible student assistant needed to work at Lawrence Berkeley
Laboratory for 9-10 hours per week, times are flexible.  Knowledge of
Microsoft Word and Excel is recommended.  Free shuttle from downtown
Berkeley BART to the lab.  Salary: $7.25 per hour.  Call Susan

The Pasta Shop is looking for seniors to work on weekends at 1786
Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Pick up an application at the store and

Student needed for filing and organizing two to six hours per week in
Albany on the 43 bus line.  Times are flexible.  $7.50 per hour

King Middle School Afterschool ELL Tutorial is looking for Spanish
bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday,
and from 2:15-3:15 on Wednesday.  We'll also hire monolingual
English-speaking tutors who want to patiently work with middle school
students.  You must be in 11th or 12th grade and able to get to King
on time!  Pay:  $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science Building, Room 7 and
ask for Patricia Rathwell or Akemi Hamai, or call 644-4811.

Want to be a chef? Would you like to work in hotel management? The
Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program of City College of
San Francisco is now accepting applications for Fall 2006.  For more

FAFSA Workshops - sign up in D221 for the daytime workshops
Bring your financial information and your questions.  Trained
assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill out

School library computer lab.

10:30 AYUSA - Have you ever thought about studying abroad while still
in high school?  It's a wonderful way to immerse yourself in another
culture, dramatically improve your foreign language skills, become
more independent, have fun, and make yourself more competitive for
the work market.  AYUSA Study abroad is making it easy for you to
study abroad by offering partial scholarships to study in countries
like Spain, England, France, Germany, Costa Rica, and more!  You can
study abroad for the summer, semester, or academic year.  Come meet
an AYUSA representative at 10:30 am on Thursday, February 16 to find
out more and ask your questions!  

SCHOLARSHIPS
Berkeley Rotary Scholarship - Senior with financial need, academic
potential, and involved in extracurricular activities.  Applications
available in D221.  Awards:  Up to $5,000, renewable for four years.
Deadline:  March 16 (received date).  

Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship - Female senior of Chicana/Latina
background with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend a two or
four year institution after graduation and has financial need. U.S.
Citizenship or permanent residency is NOT a requirement. Applications
available in D221. $250 scholarship. Deadline:  April 1.

Ligurians in the World Association - A graduating senior who has at
least one parent of Italian descent.  $1,000 scholarship.
Application available in D221.  Deadline:  April 15 (application must
be received by the scholarship committee by that date).  

Richard S. Navies Scholarship - Seniors who are U.S. citizens or
legal residents, graduating from a Bay Area high school with a
minimum GPA of 2.5 who haves been a varsity athlete for at least two
years.  Students should also have volunteered in school or community
organizations. Award:  $2,500. Deadline:  March 17.  

Anita Baskerville Harris Scholarship Award - Graduating
African-American female with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with financial need
who is planning to attend a four year college or university.
Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000.  Deadline:  April 1.

Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship for the Arts - Senior in a Bay Area
High School with artistic talent shown by audition tape who will be
attending an accredited college next year.  Awards in vocal, acting
and dance areas.  Three $10,000 scholarships.  Deadline:  April 21.  

Gill Scholarship - For Berkeley High seniors who have financial need.
Essay and letters of recommendation required.  $1,000 scholarship
renewable for three additional years of college.  Deadline:  April 6.


Berkeley Community Fund - Open only to Berkeley High seniors planning
to attend two or four year college in the fall who have financial
need and academic excellence.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline:  March 6 - must be received at the Fund by March 6 at 5:00
p.m.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - February 24 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 1 SAT.   March 3 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 8 ACT.  

Scholarship - Elder & Leemaur Publishers "University Writing
Scholarship".   Write an essay on one of three topics.  Up to $10,000
award.  Topics are available in D221 or at

Deadline:  March 1.

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest - sponsored by LA con IV, the
64th World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.
Students enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme,
original artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science
essay.  Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:
March 31.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Leap Now has a long list of summer options, as well as semester and
year-long options for students who would like to take some time off
between high school and college.  www.leapnow.org.  

Oxbridge Academic Programs offer summer sessions in Oxford, Cambridge
and Paris with a wide range of courses.  There are scholarships
available.  Scholarship deadline is February 28.  Applications in
D221 and at www.oxbridgeprograms.com.

California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS)
is now accepting applications.  COSMOS is now enrolling students at
four sites - UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz.  Tuition,
room and board is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for
qualified students.  The COSMOS course clusters address topics not
traditionally taught in high schools such as astronomy, aerospace
engineering, biomedical sciences, computer science, wetlands ecology,
ocean science, robotics, game theory, and more.  The program runs
from July 9-August 5.  Apply at
http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/welcome.html.  Deadline is March 16 at
5:00 p.m.
