SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   CREDENCE - belief or trust.  Surprisingly,
Susie's teacher gave credence to her story that the dog ate her
homework.  

*STUDENTS TAKING PRACTICE SAT ON SATURDAY
Sophomores and juniors - if you signed up for the practice SAT on
Saturday, please meet in the courtyard in front of the C building
before 9:00 a.m.  Remember to bring number 2 pencils and a
calculator.

FOR SENIORS
FAFSA Workshops - sign up in D221 for the daytime workshops
Bring your financial information and your questions.  Trained
assistants from UC Berkeley will be available to help you fill out
the financial aid forms.  All workshops are in the Berkeley High
School library computer lab.

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Gill Scholarship - For Berkeley High seniors who have financial
need.  Essay and letters of recommendation required.  $1,000
scholarship renewable for three additional years of college.
Deadline:  April 6.  

Berkeley Community Fund - Open only to Berkeley High seniors planning
to attend two or four year college in the fall who have financial
need and academic excellence.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline:  March 6 - must be received at the Fund by March 6 at 5:00
p.m.

HACEMOS - Open to seniors who live in either Alameda or Contra Costa
County who are planning to enroll in a two or four year college in
the fall.  Applications available in D221.  Six to eight scholarships
of $500-$2,000 each.  Deadline:  March 1.  

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholarship - Latino student
planning to attend two or four year college, active participant in
community service, financial need, good writing skills, U.S. citizen
or permanent resident.  Applications available in D221.  Award:
$2,500 to student attending four year college; $1,000 to two year
college.  Deadline:  March 1.  

Morris and Juliet James Achievement Award - Scholarship sponsored by
the Berkeley Retired Teachers Association.  Must be a BHS senior.
Preference goes to students who have attended Berkeley Unified School
District schools for most of their school years.  Applications
available in D221. Deadline:  April 5, 2006.  

Kiwanis Scholarship - Open to all students from Berkeley, Albany and
El Cerrito.  Two letters of recommendation and essay required.  A
total of $35,000 in scholarship money will be awarded. Complete
application must be received by Kiwanis by March 31.   

Pick up a list of all of the scholarships that have been listed in
the bulletin in D221.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Free SAT and ACT prep for Berkeley library card holders.  Go to
www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org/.  Then click on Electronic Resources,
then Education, then Learn A Test.  You will be asked for your name
and library card number at this point. Under subject category
"College Entrance Exams" choose one of the SAT or ACT options.  

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - February 24 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 1 SAT.   March 3 is the regular registration deadline
for the April 8 ACT. 

FOR JUNIORS
*Nordstrom Scholarship Program - Current high school junior, minimum
2.7 on a 4.0 scale, have financial need, reside in the Bay Area and
not have a conviction of any crime.  Essay required.  Applications
available in D221.  Deadline:  May 31.  

KRON 4 Students Rising Above Scholarship.  This is a scholarship for
students who will graduate from high school and then attend college
in 2007.  Students must be from low income families who are rising
above great difficulties and succeeding in school and in life.
Applications are available in D221.  To qualify, students must be
U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Applications must be received by KRON by Tuesday, April 4.

Mr. Stringfellow and I will be meeting with all junior English
classes the week of February 6.  Following the group meetings, you
will be able to sign up for individual meetings with one of us.

Tuesday, February 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Junior parent college meeting in
the Berkeley High library.  Enter at 1980 Allston Way.  I will
provide an overview of all aspects of the college admissions process.

ALL STUDENTS
Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest - sponsored by LA con IV, the
64th World Science Fiction Convention and Baltimore Worldcon 1998.
Students enter a short story with a science fiction or fantasy theme,
original artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme or a science
essay.  Complete rules and application available in D221.  Deadline:
March 31.  

Have you ever thought about studying abroad while still in high
school?  It's a wonderful way to immerse yourself in another culture,
dramatically improve your foreign language skills, become more
independent, have fun, and make yourself more competitive for college
and the work market.  AYUSA Study abroad is making it easy for you to
study abroad by offering partial scholarships to study in countries
like Spain, England, France, Germany, Costa Rica, and more!  You can
study abroad for the summer, semester, or academic year.  Come meet
an AYUSA representative at 10:30 am on Thursday, February 16 to find
out more and ask your questions! Sign up in D221 to attend this
presentation. Deadlines are fast approaching, so don't delay!

Berkeley Youth Alternatives (BYA) has available part-time positions
for teenagers who are demonstrating their ability to meet and/or
exceed the requirements to graduate from high school. The available
positions are to work with our Community Garden Team or to work with
our Landscaping Team. The hours are Mon-Fri 4-6pm.  To apply, please
bring your most recent report card or progress report and stop by our
Career Center at 1255 Allston Way and fill out an application.
Seniors especially are encouraged to apply.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS)
is now accepting applications.  COSMOS is now enrolling students at
four sites - UC Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz.  Tuition,
room and board is $2,000, but FULL SCHOLARSHIPS are available for
qualified students.  The COSMOS course clusters address topics not
traditionally taught in high schools such as astronomy, aerospace
engineering, biomedical sciences, computer science, wetlands ecology,
ocean science, robotics, game theory, and more.  The program runs
from July 9-August 5.  Apply at
http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/welcome.html.  Deadline is March 16 at
5:00 p.m.
