SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CATACLYSM - a major disaster.  Of the many
cataclysms described in the Bible, the most famous is the Great Flood
survived only by Noah and his fellow ark-goers.  

PSAT scores are here!  Students may pick up their scores in the
College/Career Center at lunchtime and from 3:15 to 4:00 ONLY.

TODAY - Thursday, January 5, 6:30-8:30 in the College/Career Center.
"What's Up With College?"  Do you want to know what really happens
when you go away to college?  Come hear all about life at college
from the experts -- BHS alumni who are currently attending schools
all over the country. Get past the college admissions hard sell and
glossy brochures for the inside story on dorm food, grade inflation,
downsizing, upsizing, and other cultural "adjustments".  This event
is sponsored by Academic Choice and is open to all interested
Berkeley High students and their families.  

*Vista College has a new class - Introduction to African-American
Studies.  Saturdays, 10-1, beginning January 14 at Berkeley Youth
Alternative.  The class is free to high school students and you can
earn both high school and college credit.  For more information, call
Rebeca Mireles at 253-5701.  

FOR SENIORS
*If you applied to any colleges which require your first semester
grades, Mid-Year Report Forms are due to Ms. Mellion in D173 no later
than January 17.  Turn in the Mid-Year Report Form along with a
Transcript Request Form with "Mid Year Report" written across the top
and a stamped envelope addressed to the college with a return address
of Berkeley High School, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA  94704.
Remember that the cost of postage has increased to 39 cents per
ounce.

If you need an appointment with the College Advisor, come by the
College Center and sign up.  There are many slots available.

UC MERCED CONTINUES TO ACCEPT APPLICATIONS.  If you would like to
apply to UC Merced, you may do so up by mailing your application by
January 14, 2006.  You must apply by mail.  You can download an
application at
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/apply/
download.html or pick one up in D221.  If you still need to take
either the SAT reasoning test or SAT subject tests, you can do so on
January 28.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the
College Center and the Registrar's office.  It takes only a few
minutes to fill out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines
your eligibility for a Cal Grant.  

FINANCIAL AID - The new FAFSA on the Web Worksheet is now available
in the College/Career Center.  Come by to pick up a copy so that you
can be prepare to file the FAFSA online.  

*Whittier College - if you are applying and would like to set up an
interview, contact Katie Feetham at 562-907-4238 or
kfeetham at whittier.edu.  Interviews will be held in the Bay Area on
January 16, 17 and 18.

*Skidmore College information session - Saturday, January 7,
2:00-4:00 pm, SF Airport Marriott, 1800 Old Bayshore Highway,
Burlingame.  RSVP at 518-580-5585.

MISSED THE CAL STATE DEADLINE?
*The following Cal State campuses are still accepting applications:
Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay
(formerly named Hayward), Fresno, Fullerton (Computer Science and
Engineering majors only), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Sacramento, San
Bernardino, San Marcos, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San Francisco (except
majors in Apparel Design & Merchandising, Interior Design, and Social
Work) and San Jose.  Please see me or Mr. Stringfellow if you would
like help filling out an application.  NOTE - THE DEADLINE TO APPLY
TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE IS JANUARY 13.  

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Banatao Engineering Scholarships - Open to all students of Filipino
heritage (at least 50%), minimum GPA of 3.0, planning to major in
engineering, computer or physical sciences and has
financial need.  Five renewable scholarships of $5,000 each.
Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  February 10.

UCLA alumni scholarships - Apply at www.UCLAlumni.net/Scholarships.
Deadline:  February 15, 2006.  

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship (please note this is different
than the other AXA scholarship) - open to seniors who are U.S.
citizens or legal residents who are planning to attend a two or four
year college in the fall and who have outstanding achievement in
school, community or work activities.  $2,000 scholarship.
Applications available in D221 or at www.axaonline.com/axafoundation.
Deadline: February 17, 2006

Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship - seniors who are Catholic
and of Italian descent and who have a minimum GPA of at least 3.2 are
eligible. Applications available in D221.  $400 scholarship.
Deadline: March 15, 2006.  

UTSA Tennis & Education Foundation - numerous scholarships for
students who play tennis and have financial need, ranging in value
from $500 to $15,000 each.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:
February 3, 2006.

Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West.  Award:  up to $1,000
based on financial need, academic qualifications, dedication to
school, community and family, and extraordinary circumstances.  Based
primarily on overcoming personal challenges.  Apply online only at
www.fsrequests.com/splawn.  Deadline:  January 20, 5:00 p.m. EST.   

 
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*Two helpful lunchtime workshops led by BHS alum and UC Berkeley
Incentive Awards winner, Laila Nossier, in Conference Room A.
Tuesday, January 10 - study skills and organizational skills for the
college application process.  Thursday, January 12 - ways to reduce
stress in the college application process.  Don't miss these useful
sessions!

ARTISTS - National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 21 at Art Academy
University, 79 New Montgomery St., San Francisco, 12:00 noon - 4:00pm
This is your chance to have your portfolio reviewed by an expert.
Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of art and design will be

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - January 4 is the late registration deadline for
the January 28 SAT.  January 6 is the regular registration deadline
for the February 11 ACT.  Seniors, please remember that you must list
all of your colleges on the registration form to receive your
official scores. 

FOR JUNIORS
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIORS - Discover Card Tribute Award
Scholarship.  Up to $25,000 per winner.  Open to all juniors who have
a minimum GPA of 2.75 for 9th and 10th grades, have experienced
significant obstacles and are giving back to their communities.

Deadline:  January 31, 2006.  

ALL STUDENTS
Save Me A Spot in College Scholarship Contest.  Use your talents to
write an essay, create a poster or produce a 30 second TV ad on the
topic: Why should California leaders save you and your peers a spot
in college?  A total of $50,000 in scholarship prizes will be
awarded.  Open to all students in grades 6-12. For more information,

SUMMER PROGRAMS
George Washington University Summer Scholars Pre-College Program.
Several programs including - Applied pre-engineering, Engineering and
Summer Science Research Scholarship (physics and biophysics), as well
as programs in the humanities.  For applications and information, go

SUMMER OPPORTUNITY - Stanford University Center for Clinical
Immunology Summer Intern Program.  If you are interested in biology,
apply for this 8 week program consisting of lab research, lectures by
selected faculty and graduates and some clinical exposure.  Interns
will be paid $1,500.  No housing is provided.  Applications are
