SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  CACOPHONY - an unpleasant sound.  A cacophony
poured forth from the school's music room as the third grade class
had its first-ever band practice.  

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT FOR SENIOR PARENTS:  December 6, 6:30 p.m. in the
Berkeley High School library.   Please come and bring all your
questions about financial aid, merit aid and scholarships.  A
representative of the UC Berkeley Financial Aid Office will walk us
through the FAFSA, line by line and I will discuss the CSS Profile.

* Adult and Youth Job Fair, Thursday, November 17, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m., The East Side Club, McAfee Coliseum, 7000 Coliseum Way,
Oakland.  Bring your sample job application and resumes.  For more

ESSAY READERS ARE HERE
Do you need some help with your college application essay?  Starting
this week, essay readers will be available every day before school,
at lunch, and after school (except Friday after school).  Essay
readers will also be available on Wednesdays, 6th period, for seniors
who do not have a class then.  WE WILL ALSO HAVE A READER HERE ON
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21 DURING FIRST PERIOD

COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSIONS IN THE BAY AREA
November 21 - University of Vermont information session.  Children's
Hospital Oakland Research Institute, 5700 Martin Luther King Jr. Way,
Oakland.  6:00-8:00 p.m.  RSVP to www.uvm.edu/admissions/rsvp.  

SCHOLARSHIPS
*Metro PCS Community Scholars Program.  Open to seniors attending
public high school in one of the Bay Area counties who plan to enroll
full-time in a two or four year college or university and have a
minimum GPA of 3.0 unweighted and who have volunteered in activities
that give back to the student's community.  Applications available in
D221 or at www.metropcs.com/scholarship.  Deadline:  December 19.
$1,000 scholarship.  

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY COLLEGES.  We have a new scholarship box in
the College/Career Center with information on special scholarships
offered by individual colleges.  Come by and check out the
opportunities.  Also, check out

scholarships offered by individual colleges.  

Miss Teen Chinatown Scholarship.  Applicants must submit a recent
photo, official transcript and application.  Applications are
available in D221.  For more information, go to
www.sfclcfoundation.org or call 650-348-2333.  Deadline:  December
31.  

Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West.  Award:  up to $1,000
based on financial need, academic qualifications, dedication to
school, community and family, and extraordinary circumstances.  Based
primarily on overcoming personal challenges.  Apply online only at
www.fsrequests.com/splawn.  Deadline:  January 20, 5:00 p.m. EST.  

AWARD OPPORTUNITY
The Soroptimist Club offers a $1,000 award to a young woman ages
14-17 who "make the community and world a better place through
volunteer efforts. Volunteer actions that benefit women and girls are
particularly valued."  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:
December 1.  

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*UC Irvine Stay-Over Program. Spend the night in a residence hall,
take a campus tour, and visit classes. Dates available from January
17-March 9, Monday through Thursday only.   Applications available in
D221.   They recommend applying early since this program fills up

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -November 17 is the late registration for the
December 10 ACT.  This is the last test recommended for the UC and
Cal State campuses, as well as many private schools.  Please remember
that you must list all of your colleges on the registration form to
receive scores.  

FREE SAT ESSAY PRACTICE - NOTE CORRECTED DATE - Monday, November 21.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
*Oxbridge Academic Programs in Europe.  Information session on

SUMMER OPPORTUNITY - Stanford University Center for Clinical
Immunology Summer Intern Program.  If you are interested in biology,
apply for this 8 week program consisting of lab research, lectures by
selected faculty and graduates and some clinical exposure.  Interns
will be paid $1,500.  No housing is provided.  Applications are
available at http://ccis.stanford.edu.  Deadline:  January 16.  For
