Administration

1. NO SCHOOL FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11: Veteran’s Holiday

2. No IDs will be taken today.  You can take pictures on Tuesday, November 15th in the counseling office if you need an ID.

3. Please continue bringing canned food to your 2nd period class until December 10th!  This is for the Holiday Meal to help the homeless.  We appreciate your help!

4. Cody’s Books School Benefit Daze: Friday: Monday, November 11-14, 2005. 25% of the proceeds of your purchases at Cody’s during this four day event will be contributed to Berkeley High.  Shop (2 Berkeley locations) at 2454 Telegraph Ave, and 1730 Fourth Street; 1 San Francisco location-2 Stockton Street at Market. Just save your receipts and mail them to Julie Wong, 1311 Santa Fe Ave, Berkeley, CA 94702   or call 528-8191.

Clubs

1. Close-Up meets today.  All interested students should plan to meet -or contact- Mr. Collier in G201.  The Close Up meeting is Wednesday, lunchtime, G201.  Applications will be distributed, questions will be answered, and information will be available.  Close-Up.

2. Are you an artist or writer?  Like to draw or take pictures?  Then enter the National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month Poster-Essay Contest.  It’s easy- create an original 8.5 x 11 poster and write a 200 word or less essay on drunk and drugged driving prevention.  Turn in your entries to H105, the Health Center by Wednesday, December 7 for your chance to win some cool prizes.

3. The second club commissioners meeting will be held on Thursday, November 10th in G210 at lunch today.  All club representatives must be there. If you plan on having meetings/ fundraisers/ or events during the month of November you must be present.  We will cover accounting procedures, schedule events and club day!

4. Come to the APIC meeting at lunch today in G302. Also, if you’re interested in being involved in an Asian graduation, be sure to check it out.

5. Health Fact of the Week:  Drivers who use cell phones while driving are four times more likely to crash than those not on a cell phone.  Be safe while driving by avoiding the use of cell phones.  This health fact was brought to you by the Berkeley High School Health Center Youth Advisor.

6. The few, the proud, IT’s:  Informational meetings November 10th and 16th in room C213 at lunch.

Sports

1.  Congratulations to the Berkeley High Girls Volleyball for their victory over Encinal on Tuesday night.  If both teams win their Thursday matches, they will be declared "ACCAL Co Champions."  They will play off for the automatic berth to the NCS post-season tournament at Encinal High School on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 pm.  Tickets $5 adult, $3 student/senior.  Come out and support your Yellow Jackets! 

2. BHS Crew: looking for a spring sport?  The BHS crew team needs additional novice rowers, for men’s and women’s crew, to fill out the team roster.  Rowers are conditioning over the winter in preparation for the spring race season.  No previous rowing experience required!  Contact Coach Chris Dadd at 925-676-8025.

3. The final league football game of the year versus rival El Cerrito has been moved from Thursday to Friday at 5:00 p.m. at El Cerrito.  Students/Seniors $3 and Adults $5.  Come out and support your Yellow Jackets!

Senior / Junior Section

1. Seniors: If you are applying to any private schools which require counselor recommendations, your large envelopes addressed to each college along with a Transcript request Form and the Counselor Recommendation Form (also called the school report form), are due in the College/ Career Center no later than November 10th.  See Mrs. Abrams or Mrs. Harris in
D221.

2. Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West.  Award: up to $1,000 based on financial need, academic qualifications, dedication to school, community and family, and extraordinary circumstances.  Based primarily on overcoming personal challenges.  Apply online at <www.fsrequests.com/splawn>.  Deadline is January 20th at 5:00 pm EST.

3. Did you know that you can apply to up to 31 colleges that are on the Common Black College Application for only a $35 fee?  Go to <www.eduinconline.com> for more information or stop by the College/Career Center.

4. Award Opportunity: The Soroptimist club offers award to a young woman ages 14-17 that make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. Volunteer actions that benefit women and girls are particularly valued.  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:
December 1.

Events/ Performance
1. Razors and rolling pins…Come see what everyone is talking about.  Last weekend for “SWEENEY TODD, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”!  Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10, 11, 12 at 7:30.  Longfellow Middle School Auditorium.  $12 general and $6 for students and seniors.  Tickets are available at the door, or for advance reservations call 510-595-5514 or email <ymtctickets at hotmail.com>.  Don’t miss it!

2. Young people, ages 15-24 make up half of all new HIV infections worldwide.  More than 6000 become infected everyday. The HIV Prevention Program will be sponsoring a school-wide event on Thursday, December 1st for World AIDS Day.  Stop by the Community Theater 8am to 4pm.  There will be displays, hands-on learning activities, a tour of AIDS memorial quilt panels, as well as panels made to BHS students.  Come by, STOP AIDS, and keep the promise.
