SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   UNDERMINE - to weaken by destroying the
foundation.  In 1963, Nelson Mandela was convicted of trying to
undermine the white South African government.

*PSAT SIGN UP INFORMATION - We will take sign-ups September 21
through September 30 during lunch and after school until 4:00 p.m. at
the D building ticket window on Allston Way. The cost is $22, cash or
money order only. Money orders should be made payable to Berkeley
High.

FOR PARENTS

September 27 - Senior parents college night at 6:30 p.m. in the BHS
library.  Please come to get all of your questions answered about the
college application process.

College Representative visits.  The complete September list is
available in D221.  Sign up to get more information on colleges from
around the country.  You must have your teacher's signed

*Scholarship Opportunity - Incentive Awards Program provides a
$32,000 scholarship to UC Berkeley to low income students with a GPA
of 3.5 or above.  Come to a presentation by the Incentive Awards
coordinator on Thursday, September 22 at 2:20 p.m. in Conference Room
A.  You must sign up prior to the meeting in D221 and pick up a
preliminary application.

College Fair - Sunday, September 18, 10:00-3:00.  John F. Kennedy
High School, 4300 Cutting Blvd., Richmond.  Many Historically Black
Colleges & Universities, UC'S - Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego,
Riverside - San Francisco State, Sonoma State and many more.  If you
have a 2.0 or above, bring several copies of your transcript and test
scores and you can talk one-on-one with official college admissions
representatives.

REMINDER:  If you are applying to private colleges which need a
counselor recommendation, your Senior Profiles are due on September
23rd for Regular Decision.  You do NOT need to fill these out if you
are applying only to the UC's, Cal State Universities or community
colleges.

SCHOLARSHIPS Sinkler Miller Medical Association High School
Scholarship Application. Scholarship for African-American students.
Pick up an application in the College/Career Center.
Deadline: September 27.

Ron Brown Scholar Program.  Academically talented, highly motivated
African-American students who are seniors and plan to pursue
undergraduate degrees full-time who are US citizens or permanent
residents.  Scholarship is $10,000 per year for four years.  Apply
October 1 to November 15.  Applications available in D221 or at
http://www.ronbrown.org.

AXA Achievers Scholarship - win up to $25,000.  Describe in detail an
outstanding achievement you have accomplished in a non-academic
activity or project which occurred in school, community or workplace.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS

*FREE SAT PREP CLASS AT BERKELEY HIGH - People's Test Preparation
Service is offering a 9 week SAT course in preparation for the
November test.  Classes meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30
p.m. in room G207.  First class meeting is on Wednesday, September
21.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -September 16 is the regular registration deadline
for the October 22 ACT test.  September 30 is the regular
registration deadline for the November 5 SAT and SAT subject tests.
I generally recommend that juniors take the PSAT in October and wait
until spring to take the SAT or the ACT.   Come to the College Center
every day from 3:30 to 4:00 if you need help setting up an online
account with College Board.

FREE TEST PREP SESSIONS Princeton Review is offering the following
free sessions.  Sign up at www.PrincetonReview.com/events. Wednesday,
September 21 - Free SAT strategy session, 2176 Shattuck Ave.,
Berkeley, 7:00-8:30 p.m.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

JOB INFORMATION Student needed to do filing and other clerical work
one afternoon each week in a small architectural office in South
Berkeley, near Alcatraz and Adeline Streets.  Salary: $8/hour.
