The end of summer is rapidly approaching and it's time to get ready
for 11th grade AP Language and Composition! For those of you that
have left this to the last possible minute, the summer reading
assignment for this course is posted below.

SUMMER READING LIST for AP Language and Composition:

The three books required are available through doverpublications.com
or at Cody’s where we will put in an order. These books are
inexpensive; the combined cost is $5.50 plus tax. We expect you to
comment and take notes on these books.

Each book has a specific reading assignment:

* Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass -- read entire book.
* Self-Reliance and Other Essays – read all four essays in the first
section, From Essays (1841).
* Great American – read the short stories of Hawthorne, Melville,
Gilman, Bierce, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway.

As you read keep a dialectical journal. This style of journaling
requires that your
journal entries follow a specific format: double-column responses to
the following questions:

Vocabulary word (and page number)
Quotation (and page number)
Character notes
Examples of Rhetorical Techniques* cited
Allusions used
Question the author. Assume he/she will read your journal. What would
you like to ask?
Definition
Response and ruminations
Responses, connections, meanings
Identification and discussion
Allusions explained
Associations and connections
