SAT WORD OF THE DAY: INFINITESIMAL – extremely tiny. Magic Johnson
was welcomed back into the NBA when his fellow players realized that
the chance of contracting HIV from him was infinitesimal.
I will be out of the office today visiting colleges.
CAREER FAIR, Maximizing Your Career Potential – Thursday, May 19th,
11:30 to 5:00. Berkeley High has not had a career fair in many years
and this one will be great. Students, come by and get information on
jobs, careers, resume writing and much more. We also need parent
volunteers for two hour shifts beginning at 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 and
4:00. Please e-mail me if you can help.
PARENTS – Can you donate baked goods or drinks for the Senior Awards
Ceremony on Tuesday, May 24th? If you can, please let me know via
e-mail (iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us) or phone (644-6804). This is a
great opportunity to support our seniors who have distinguished
themselves in so many ways.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
*East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has a paid internship
opportunity for current sophomores who are interested in engineering.
Economically disadvantaged youth or students who will be the first in
their family to go to college are especially encouraged to apply, but
the program is open to all applicants. Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.
Students will work 2-3 hours after school and full time during the
summer. Applications available in the College Center. Deadline: May
27th.
*SightSpeed creates innovative software that turns your PC or Mac into
an easy-to-use
video phone. They are looking for office help 15-20 hours per week
during the school year and additional hours during the summer. Must be
able to lift 25 pounds and have basic computer skills. Send a cover

Want to make a difference in your community and make money at the same
time? California Youth Energy Services is hiring youth for this summer!
CYES youth retrofitters teach residents how to save energy in their own
homes, and install energy saving hardware in people's houses. It's a
perfect fit for students who are interested in saving the environment
while improving their professional skills. The summer season is Monday
through Friday, 9 am-3 pm starting June 27th. Applications are due this
Friday at 2033 Center St. in Berkeley and are available at the College
Center. Call 428-2357 for more information.
SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
Parents: do you ever wonder how to help your student become better at
studying? Join us on the evening of Tuesday, May 17, 6:30 p.m. for a
free presentation in the College/Career Center, full of tips and
suggestions for helping your teenager develop study habits that can
last through high school and into college.
Practice SAT test at Berkeley High School on Saturday, May 21, 9:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cost: $15. Fee waivers available. Sign up in the
College Center no later than May 18th.
SATURDAY - Shouldn't you try the ACT? If you would like to know how
you'd do on the ACT--an alternative test to the SAT--you can take a
free, proctored exam on Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 until 1:00. The
test is hosted by Classroom Matters and will be held at their learning
center located at 2607 7th Street, Suite E. Please call ahead for

SENIOR SECTION.
Vista College has a new major – the Global Studies Program. Get an AA
degree that prepares you for transfer to many UC and CSU programs; take
classes with the same students for two years; work closely with core
faculty and counselors and work at local non-profits. For more

REMINDER - Seniors – The deadline to turn in your forms for the Senior
Awards Ceremony has been extended until May 16th. The ceremony will be
held on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Theater. Scholar
athletes, mayor’s award winners, scholarship winners, and all other
award winners – we want to honor you! Pick up the Senior Awards
Ceremony form in the College/Career Center and let us know about
scholarships, awards and honors you have won. Deadline: Wednesday,
May 11 so you can be listed in the program.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the
College/Career Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!
* James Beard Foundation has many scholarships for students pursuing
culinary studies. Come by the College Center to pick up the
application. Deadline: June 30.
Pac-West Scholarship – California resident with a cumulative unweighted
GPA of 3.5 or higher, minimum SAT score of 1100 or ACT score of 24
planning to attend a 4 year college in the fall. $5,000 scholarship.
Students planning to attend University of the Pacific or Santa Clara
are eligible for additional monies. Deadline: June 30.
Charlie Cords Memorial Scholarship – Male students planning to attend
UC Berkeley . Up to $2,500 awarded. Applications available at
http://ducalifornia.org/scholarships. E-mail Derick Koo Sohn at
DKSohn at berkeley.edu if you have any questions. Deadline: August 13,
but apply ASAP.
John F. McGillicuddy Scholarship Program – Must have 3.0 GPA or better
in the 11th and 12th grades, show involvement in community service,
have financial need and plan to attend a United Negro College Fund
college or university in the fall. Covers full or partial tuition and
room and board for four years. Applications available in the College
Center. Deadline: May 31.

ACT – May 20 is the late registration deadline for the June 11 ACT test.
