CAS / Berkeley High Brunch fundraiser for Mexico Exchange.
Celebrity cookbook author Mollie Katzen and Restaurante Doña Tomás
participate in fundraising brunch and silent auction for Bay Area
students
Sunday, May 22nd, 10:30 am, Restaurante Doña Tomás, Oakland
The Berkeley High/CAS Mexico-Exchange program will host a silent
auction and benefit brunch featuring a delicious menu selected by
best-selling vegetarian cookbook author, Mollie Katzen, and
co-owner/chef Dona Savitsky of the acclaimed Bay Area Restaurante Doña
Tomás. Katzen and Savitsky will supervise brunch preparation by the
parents, staff, and students of CAS Mex-Ex as a fundraiser for this
summer’s exchange program to Morelia, Mexico. Katzen’s cookbooks,
including the classic Moosewood Cookbook, will be available for
purchase and signing at the brunch. All proceeds from book sales and a
silent auction will benefit the Mexico Exchange program.
Thirteen Berkeley High School students have been chosen to be part of
this unusual exchange program, now in its fourth year. The program is
sponsored by CAS, a small school within Berkeley High where students
learn media skills while exploring issues of social responsibility and
world citizenship. While in Mexico, the Berkeley students will live
with Mexican families, study Spanish at a language school, and share
their technical skills with their Mexican counterparts. Working in
small cross-cultural teams, the students will complete video projects
that are important to their young Mexican hosts. The Berkeley students,
who were selected regardless of their ability to pay, are now involved
in several activities to raise funds for scholarships and other
expenses, including the purchase of additional technology for the
success of the projects.
Brunch will be served on May 22nd at 10:30 AM at Restaurante Doña Tomás,
5004 Telegraph Ave. Oakland. Tickets are $30.
