SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   PUGNACIOUS – combative; belligerent;  
quarrelsome.  The Pug is a pugnacious dog; it frequently bites people  
and gets into fights.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
*Coach boys and girls, ages 4-14 in soccer, baseball, softball,

Meyer Sound Labs has paid summer internships for high school students

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
*JUNIORS – this Saturday, April 23, if you are a member of a community  
service club at BHS, take a tour of UC Berkeley, sponsored by the  
American Red Cross at Cal.  10:00-3:00 p.m.  Meet in front of Sproul  
Hall, at Telegraph and Bancroft in Berkeley.  If you are interested, or  
have any questions regarding this event, please contact either Bonnie

April 30, 1:00 to 4:30 – College Fair at St. Mary’s College of  
California, Moraga.  This is the biggest college fair of the year, with  
over 150 colleges represented.  There will also be workshops on  
admissions, financial aid, athletics, Historically Black Colleges and  
more, some in Spanish.  Take BART to Orinda and pick up the free

Juniors - We have just received the new pamphlet put out by the  
University of California called “Introducing the University.”  It  
contains valuable information on admissions statistics for each campus,  
majors offered by each campus, application information and much more.   
Come by the College Center to pick up your copy.

Shouldn't you try the ACT?  If you would like to know how you'd do on  
the ACT--an alternative test to the SAT--you can take a free, proctored  
exam on Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 until 1:00.  The test is hosted by  
Classroom Matters and will be held at their learning center located at  
2607 7th Street, Suite E.  Please call ahead for directions at 540-8646

  SENIOR SECTION.
*REMINDER – You MUST send your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to  
your school of choice where you have been accepted by May 1.  Because  
May 1 is a Sunday, many colleges will accept a May 2 postmark date.  If  
in doubt, check with the college.  If you are sending the SIR by mail,  
I recommend that you get a Certificate of Mailing at the post office to  
prove that you met the deadline, just in case it gets lost in the mail  
or in the admissions office.  Please also remember that it is not  
ethical to send an SIR to more than one school and schools may rescind  
their admission if they find out that you have done so.

Are you UC eligible, applied to a UC, but were not accepted to any  
campus?  Good news!  You will be receiving a letter soon stating that  
you have been accepted to UC Merced.  In addition, if you applied as an  
engineering major, you will be receiving a letter stating that you have  
been accepted to UC Riverside. Congratulations! If you do not receive a  
letter by the middle of next week, please come by the College Center.

Seniors – this is your chance to be recognized!  The Senior Awards  
Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community  
Theater.  Pick up the Senior Awards Ceremony form in the College/Career  
Center and let us know about scholarships, awards and honors you have  
won.  Deadline:  Wednesday, May 11 so you can be listed in the program.

SCHOLARSHIPS

*Charlie Cords Memorial Scholarship – Male students planning to attend  
UC Berkeley .  Up to $2,500 awarded.  Applications available at

but apply ASAP.

John F. McGillicuddy Scholarship Program – Must have 3.0 GPA or better  
in the 11th and 12th grades, show involvement in community service,  
have financial need and plan to attend a United Negro College Fund  
college or university in the fall.  Covers full or partial tuition and  
room and board for four years.  Applications available in the College  
Center. Deadline:  May 31.

St. Francis, 335 Powell Street, San Francisco.

23rd Annual Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Program Summer Conference,  
July 30-August 6 at Sacramento State University.  Open to current 10th  
and 11th graders.  Activities include Legislative Day at the State  
Capital, campaign development workshops and College Day where you will  
meet with college and financial aid experts, and leadership training.   
Applications available in D221 and online at www.clylp.com.   Postmark  
deadline:  May 2.

Confused about which schools need SAT subject tests (formerly called  
SAT II) and how many?  Here’s a very helpful web site:   
http://www.compassprep.com/subject_test.  I recommend that you double  
check this information with each school’s admissions web site.

SAT – April 29 is the regular registration deadline for the June 4th   
New SAT and SAT subject tests.
ACT – May 6 is the regular registration deadline for the June 11 ACT  
test.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
*Fir Acres Workshop in Writing and Thinking at Lewis & Clark College,  
Portland, Oregon.  July 3-15.  Work in groups of 12 students on
