Though swimming in a sea of other pressing school issues, in January
Superintendent Michele Lawrence launched an ambitious, community-wide
effort to address the longterm needs of our schools: what they need to
achieve excellence for every child, and what we might be able to do to,
at last, secure reliable funding to meet these needs.

The Foundation is co-sponsoring a series of public forums, and I serve
on the Resources work group, both of which are important components of
this process. While educational policy and school funding can be
complex, this Quality Schools process is turning out to be fascinating,
and full of promise. In an effort to share some of what we are
learning, I have prepared a summary of the process and the first two
public forums. I am writing now to invite you to read this report by
visiting our website at www.bpef-online.org/strategicplan.html

I hope you find it helpful. We will try to keep it updated. We welcome
comments or, if you are participating in Quality Schools, your own
perspectives so far. For a full report on this process, please visit
the the Berkeley Unified School District website at
www.berkeley.k12.ca.us. Regards to all.
