COLLEGE VISITS
Wednesday, March 16, 9:30 a.m. – Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Presentation for admitted seniors and juniors who are interested in the
school.
Thursday, March 17, 2:20 p.m. – Prescott College, Arizona. This is an
excellent school for students who are interested in learning by doing
in interdisciplinary small classes as well as field studies. The
school stresses individualized and self-directed studies. Majors
include human development, ecopsychology, abstract art, environmental
education and interpretation, teacher education, human ecology,
agroecology, creative writing, outdoor adventure education, management,
counseling, and wilderness leadership.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the
College/Career Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for free money! An
updated list is printed every Monday.
* Morris and Juliet James Achievement Award - students must have
attended Berkeley public elementary, middle and high schools,
participated in community service and are interested in becoming a
teacher or working with people in another capacity. $2,000.
Applications due in D-221 by April 15.
San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival - Senior of Japanese descent
with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who is actively involved in the community.
$2,000. Applications available in the College Center. Deadline:
March 24.
100 Black Men of the Bay Area & the National Coalition of 100 Black
Women – Bay Area high school senior planning to attend four or two year
college or trade school with a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 during
grades 10-12 and financial need. Applications available in the College
Center. Deadline: March 31.
Alpha Kappa Alpha - Graduating African American female with a minimum
GPA of 3.0, not including non-academic courses with economic need.
$500-$2,000. Deadline: April 1.
Oakland Association of Insurance Agents - Graduating senior with a
minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 with financial need who has participated
in community service. $5,000 scholarship and peer mentoring and
advising. Deadline: March 31 (received date).
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – African American senior attending two or
four year college in the fall. Recommendations and essay required.
$2,500. Deadline: March 19.

FOR JUNIORS
Parents – if you missed the College Meeting for Junior Parents, the
videotape is now available. Send an e-mail to
iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us to sign up to borrow it. You may borrow the
tape for up to three days. If you are an AOL subscriber, please

ACT – March 18 is the late registration deadline for the April 9 ACT
test.
SAT – March 25 is the regular registration deadline for the May 7th New
SAT and SAT subject tests.
FOR ALL GRADES
* March 23, 10:35 (3rd period) – See a short film and meet with one of
last year’s participants of Seeking Common Ground, looking for
participants for two international leadership development and
peace-building teen programs. Building Bridges for Peace brings
together American, Israeli and Palestinian teen women aged 16 and 19.
Face to Face/Faith to Faith is for teen men and women from the US,
Israel, Northern Ireland and South Africa who are going into 10th, 11th
and 12th grade this fall. Both programs begin with a 2-week camp this
summer.
Join us on March 23rd during 3rd period to see a short film, meet with
one of last year’s participants and learn more about the application
process.
The Etude Club of Berkeley is sponsoring its annual Young Artist's
Competition for musicians ages 13-18 residing in Alameda or Contra
Costa county. Deadline to apply is March 15. Inquiries can be
directed to rozalinapiano at comcast.net.
March 15 – 7-9 p.m. Students and parents interested in getting the
most ACCURATE information on: registering for Selective Service; how to
apply for Conscientious Objector Status; enlisting in the military and
issues concerning military recruitment, are welcome to join a panel of
lawyers and parents of Berkeley High Students March 15 in the
College/Career Center from 7-9pm. Sponsored by BHS College/Career
Center and Academic Choice.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career
Center. Come by and see the wide range of programs available.
Following are a few samples:
Northwestern Theatre Arts and Design/Technical and Musical Theatre
summer program. Financial aid available. Applications available in
the College Center. Deadline: April 4.
