Berkeley PTA Council invites all Berkeley Public School parents and
caregivers to an informational forum on the subject of the Teacher's Union/
School District contract dispute.
Monday, March 14th, 7:00pm-8:30pm
Longfellow Middle School Auditorium
1500 Derby Street in South Berkeley (At Sacramento Street)
Spanish and Sign Language Translation Provided (unconfirmed but we're
working on it)
Childcare provided (with snack)
Featured speakers include:
Pete Mesa, retired Oakland Unified School District Superintendent and
current Visiting Scholar at Mills College Graduate School of Education and,
Mary Alice Calahan, Ph.D. candidate in Education Policy at UC Berkeley and
past teacher's union president
Come learn more about how union/district contract negotiations work. Learn
what questions parents should be asking themselves as they are effected by
an impasse in negotiations. How do we keep the best interests of our
children in mind as we search for our role in the dispute? Come share your
concerns with representatives who are at the negotiating table, during the
public comment portion of the evening. This event will be videotaped for
later broadcasting on Berkeley cable channel 33.
Because of the sensitive nature of teacher contract disputes, Berkeley
Teacher's Union representatives and Berkeley School District staff will NOT
be invited to speak, but will be providing printed material to be taken home
and studied. All community members are invited to attend, but please no
visible insignia, buttons, armbands or signs for either the Union or
District-this will be strictly enforced. The Forum will be an opportunity to
learn more about the negotiating process. You will be invited to take home
the statistics and then make up your own mind where you stand. Let's come
together as a community and be joined by our common goal of putting the
children first.
The question and answer and comment portion of the evening will be moderated
by Berkeley Council Parliamentarian Lorenzo Blades.
