SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ORNATE – highly decorated.  The ornate scrollwork 
found on most paper currencies is an attempt to deter potential 
counterfeiters.

COLLEGE VISITS
*February 15
8:30 a.m. – DeVry University.  Offers associate degrees in electronics 
and computer technology, health information technology and network 
systems administration; bachelors degrees in biomedical fields, 
business administration, computers, electronics, and information and 
technical management.  Sign up in the College/Career Center.
9:30 – Western Career College and Silicon Valley College.

*March 1, 10:35 – Academy of Art University.  The representative will 
speak about undergraduate programs as well as summer programs for high 
school students.

SENIOR SECTION.
FAFSA WORKSHOPS – Get help filling out your FAFSA.  Students, parents, 
and guardians welcome.  February 8, 10, 15, 24 and 25 at 3:30 p.m. in 
the Berkeley High library.  You must sign up in the College Center.

Cash for College Days – Get individual help filling out the FAFSA and 
preparing your tax returns.  To complete the FAFSA (and your tax 
returns, if you want), bring your parent or guardian, social security 
card or alien registration card and 2004 tax returns or 2004 income 
records.  All events will be held in English and Spanish. Four 
opportunities to participate:
Saturday, February 5 – Contra Costa College, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, 
San Pablo, 10 am to 2 pm
Thursday, February 10 – Oakland Unified School District Dr. Willie 
Harper Building, 314 East 10th Street, Oakland, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 12 – Eastmont Town Center, 2nd Floor, 7200 Bancroft 
Ave., Oakland, 10 am to 2 pm
Saturday, February 26 – Laney College – Forum, 900 Fallon Street, 
Oakland, CA, 10 am to 2 pm

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the 
College Center and the Registrar’s office.  It takes only a few minutes 
to fill out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your 
eligibility for a Cal Grant.    Deadline:  January 31

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  An 
updated list is printed every Monday.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at 
www.hispanicheritageawards.org or pick up an application at a 
participating Subway.  Printed out applications from the website will 
NOT be accepted.  There are 6 categories including academic excellence, 
community service, engineering & mathematics, healthcare, journalism, 
and sports.  Students must demonstrate an interest in their category, 
academic excellence and a commitment to community service and write an 
essay on the influence of their Hispanic heritage in their lives.  
Scholarships range from $2,000 to $8,000.  Deadline:  February 11 
(received deadline)

*Banatao Filipino American Scholarship - Current senior of Filipino 
heritage (at least 50%) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who plans to major in 
engineering, computer or physical sciences and has financial need.  
Five scholarships of $5,000 each, renewable for up to three years.  
Deadline:  February 11.

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund - Student of Asian 
and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and be a US citizen, US national, 
permanent resident or citizen of the Freely Associated States, first 
time incoming college student in fall 2005, minimum unweighted GPA of 
2.7.  $2,000.  Deadline:  February 15.

Scholarships for students interested in a career in public safety – 
fire service, emergency medical services.  Interested students should 
submit a one page statement for consideration to:  Kevin White, 
Berkeley Fire Department Station #2, 2029 Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 
94704.  Deadline:  March 31.

Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college 
in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in 
extracurricular activities, community service and/or employment.  
Applications available in the College Center or at 
www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

FOR JUNIORS
Saturday, February 19, 8:30 am-3:30 pm - University of San Francisco 
Multicultural Junior Preview Day for African American, Latino and 
Native American high school juniors. You must have a minimum GPA of 
2.75 to participate.  Presentations on academics, majors, and 
eligibility requirements, campus tour, meetings with admissions 
counselors, etc.  Space is limited to 50 students.  Applications 
available in the College Center.  Free.  Application deadline:  
February 9.

SAT – February 7 is the regular registration deadline for the March 
12th SAT.  I am not recommending that juniors take this test in March, 
particularly students currently taking Algebra 2 and geometry, because 
I believe you will benefit from two more months of class time.  Please 
do not take it as a “practice,” because colleges will see all of your 
scores.  ACT – March 4 is the regular registration deadline for the 
April 9 ACT test.

FEBRUARY 8 – Junior parent college information night.  6:30-8:30 p.m.  
Berkeley High library.  Enter on Allston Way at Milvia.  For more

People’s Test Preparation Service of UC Berkeley will be offering free 
SAT prep at Berkeley High School.  Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30, 
starting February 21.  Room to be announced.  To enroll, send an email

FOR ALL GRADES
The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school conference 
on April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.”   There will 
be workshops and seminars.  Open to students in grades 9-12.  Cost:  
$15.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.  Deadline:  
March 18.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career 
Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.  
Following are a few samples:

Summer Camps and Programs Fair for students ages 8-18.  Ellen Driscoll 
Auditorium, 333 Highland Ave., Piedmont, Monday, February 7, 5:00-8:00 
p.m.  Meet directors from overnight camps, trips, community service, 
and educational programs.  For more information:  Judy Wiesen,

Stanford Medical Youth Science Program - June 19-July 24.  Current 
sophomore or junior with an interest in science, medicine and health 
careers.  Summer residential program for economically disadvantaged and 
under-represented high school students including internships, lectures 
and seminars.  All expenses paid.  Deadline:  March 15.

California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) 
offers four week residential summer programs at UC Davis, Irvine, Santa 
Cruz and San Diego for high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in 
math and science.  Financial aid is available.  For more specific 
information on each program, applications and financial aid forms, go 
to www.ucop.edu/cosmos.  Deadline:  March 15.

Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (NASA SHARP) is 
designed for students who are U.S. citizens, 16 years and older, who 
have demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, 
technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). One of NASA SHARP's 
objectives is to encourage the career paths of pre-college students who 
have been traditionally underrepresented in these fields.  They pay for 
round trip transportation, room and board for the 6 weeks (June 
20-August 12), and pay a stipend.  For more information, go to
