SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ABRIDGE – to shorten.  A foolish way to abridge a
dictionary would be to remove all words that begin with a consonant.

SENIOR SECTION.
*FAFSA WORKSHOPS – Get help filling out your FAFSA.  Students, parents,
and guardians welcome.  February 8, 10, 15, 24 and 25 at 3:30 p.m. in 
the
Berkeley High library.  You must sign up in the College Center.

Get help filling out your FAFSA and get more information on financial 
aid
resources.  Tuesday, February 22, 6:00-8:00 p.m., Alameda High School
Cafeteria, 2201 Encinal Ave., Alameda.  For more information, contact
College of Alameda, 748-2184.

New Web tool supplies college graduation rates:
College Results Online, a
new Web-based tool offered by The Education Trust, provides the 
graduation
rates of public and private colleges and universities and allows
comparison of the rates with those of similar schools. The site also can
break down the rates by race, ethnicity and gender.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the College
Center and the Registrar’s office.  It takes only a few minutes to fill
out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your eligibility for a
Cal Grant.    Deadline:  January 30

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career
Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  Come by to get the
complete list.

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund - Student of Asian
and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and be a US citizen, US national,
permanent resident or citizen of the Freely Associated States, first 
time
incoming college student in fall 2005, minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7.
$2,000.  Deadline:  February 15.

Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college 
in
the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in extracurricular
activities, community service and/or employment.  Applications available
in the College Center or at [ http://www.berkfund.org/
]www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at [
<www.hispanicheritageawards.org> or
pick up an application at a participating Subway.  Printed out
applications from the website will NOT be accepted.  There are 6
categories including academic excellence, community service, 
engineering &
mathematics, healthcare, journalism, and sports.  Students must
demonstrate an interest in their category, academic excellence and a
commitment to community service and write an essay on the influence of
their Hispanic heritage in their lives.  Scholarships range from $2,000 
to
$8,000.  Deadline:  February 11 (received deadline)

FOR EVERYONE
The Stanford Black Student Union is sponsoring a high school conference 
on
April 2nd titled “Breaking Down Barriers to Success.”   There will be
workshops and seminars.  Open to students in grades 9-12.  Cost:  $15.
Applications available in the College/Career Center.  Deadline:  March 
18.


SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The list of summer opportunities is now available in the College/Career
Center.  Come by and see the wide range of programs available.  
Following
are a few samples:

MITE2S – Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship and
Science at MIT.  The program is held from June 22-August 6.  To be
eligible, you must be a current junior and a US citizen or permanent
resident.  Tuition, room and board are free.  For more information, go 
to
http://mit.edu/mites/www .  Application deadline:  February 4.

Stanford Medical Youth Science Program - June 19-July 24.  Current
sophomore or junior with an interest in science, medicine and health
careers.  Summer residential program for economically disadvantaged and
under-represented high school students including internships, lectures 
and
seminars.  All expenses paid.  Deadline:  March 15.

California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) offers
four week residential summer programs at UC Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz 
and
San Diego for high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in math and
science.  Financial aid is available.  For more specific information on
each program, applications and financial aid forms, go to [
<www.ucop.edu/cosmos>.  Deadline:  March 15.

Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (NASA SHARP) is
designed for students who are U.S. citizens, 16 years and older, who 
have
demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, technology,
engineering or mathematics (STEM). One of NASA SHARP's objectives is to
encourage the career paths of pre-college students who have been
traditionally underrepresented in these fields.~ They pay for round trip
transportation, room and board for the 6 weeks (June 20-August 12), and
