SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  PROLIFIC – extremely productive.  Isaac Asimov is
one of history’s most prolific writers; during his adult life, his 
output
averaged over ten new books every year.

SENIOR SECTION.
Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the College
Center and the Registrar’s office.  It takes only a few minutes to fill
out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your eligibility for a
Cal Grant.    Deadline:  January 30

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below are samples of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career
Center.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free money!  Come by to get the
complete list.

*Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund - Student of Asian
and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and be a US citizen, US national,
permanent resident or citizen of the Freely Associated States, first 
time
incoming college student in fall 2005, minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7.
$2,000.  Deadline:  February 15.

*Berkeley Community Fund – Senior planning to attend 2 or 4 year college
in the fall of 2005, minimum GPA of 2.5, participates in extracurricular
activities, community service and/or employment.  Applications available
in the College Center or at [ http://www.berkfund.org/
]www.berkfund.org/apply_for_grant.htm  $500-$3,000.  Deadline:  March 7.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship – Senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA who has
taken either the SAT or the ACT and can prove financial need.

]www.walmartfoundation.org.  $1,000.  Deadline:  February 1.

California State PTA Scholarship – Senior who is a member of the 
Berkeley
High PTSA and has participated in volunteer service.  Application
available in the College Center.  $500 scholarship.  Deadline:  
February 1.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at [
http://www.hispanicheritageawards.org ]www.hispanicheritageawards.org or
pick up an application at a participating Subway.  Printed out
applications from the website will NOT be accepted.  There are 6
categories including academic excellence, community service, 
engineering &
mathematics, healthcare, journalism, and sports.  Students must
demonstrate an interest in their category, academic excellence and a
commitment to community service and write an essay on the influence of
their Hispanic heritage in their lives.  Scholarships range from $2,000 
to
$8,000.  Deadline:  February 11 (received deadline)

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
MITE2S – Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship and
Science at MIT.  The program is held from June 22-August 6.  To be
eligible, you must be a current junior and a US citizen or permanent
resident.  Tuition, room and board are free.  For more information, go

*Stanford Medical Youth Science Program - June 19-July 24.  Current
sophomore or junior with an interest in science, medicine and health
careers.  Summer residential program for economically disadvantaged and
under-represented high school students including internships, lectures 
and
seminars.  All expenses paid.  http://smysp.stanford.edu

California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science (COSMOS) offers
four week residential summer programs at UC Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz 
and
San Diego for high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in math and
science.  Financial aid is available.  For more specific information on

Applications and financial aid forms will be available on the web site

January 18th.

  TODAY - ECI, a non-profit organization, offers high school students a
choice of six summer programs in Spain and four in France, most with the
option to earn university credit. Participants take classes at a leading
language school, live with host families or in a dormitory setting, and
immerse themselves in the culture and conversation. Sessions range from
three to four weeks in length and include a variety of interesting
activities and excursions. Come to an informational meeting at Berkeley
High on Wednesday, January 19th in room C-125. The France meeting will 
be
at 7:00pm, and the Spain meeting will be at 8:00pm.

Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (NASA SHARP) is
designed for students who are U.S. citizens, 16 years and older, who 
have
demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, technology,
engineering or mathematics (STEM). One of NASA SHARP's objectives is to
encourage the career paths of pre-college students who have been
traditionally underrepresented in these fields.~ They pay for round trip
transportation, room and board for the 6 weeks (June 20-August 12), and
pay a stipend.~ For more information, go to http://nasasharp.com.

Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) sponsors the 
Summer
for Sickle Cell Science Program which offers a full-time, hands-on
experience in a research laboratory environment.  Each student will work
with a faculty mentor in his or her laboratory.  Applicants must be
current juniors or seniors with a 3.0 average or better and an interest 
in
science.  Applications are available in the College Center. An essay and
letters of recommendation are required.  Deadline:  February 15.
