SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DECRY – to criticize; bemoan.  Although many 
world leaders decried the widespread slaughter in Rwanda, nobody 
actually acted to stop it.

BLACK COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES SPRING COLLEGE TOUR – March 27-April 1.  
Includes Howard, Morgan State, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia State, North 
Carolina Central, St. Augustine and Virginia Union.  For more

SENIOR PARENTS – If you missed the Financial Aid Information Night in 
December, the videos are now available.  You may borrow one for up to 
three days.  E-mail me at iabrams at berkeley.k12.ca.us if you would like 
to sign one out.

PRESENTATIONS IN THE COLLEGE CENTER

Friday, January 14, 2:20 p.m. - Presentations on Canadian colleges and 
universities.  Many of these colleges are still accepting applications. 
  Come find out about these excellent, low cost schools.

SENIOR SECTION.
January 17 - deadline to turn in Midyear School Report Forms to the 
Registrar in D173 or the College Center.  This is required for most 
schools that requested a counselor recommendation.  It is not required 
for the UC's and most Cal State campuses.  Paperclip a regular 
business-sized envelope (addressed to the college, return address 
Berkeley High, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704) with one stamp on 
it to the college Mid-Year Report form and a Transcript Request form.  
Write "Midyear Report" on the top of each Transcript Request Form.

Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms are now available in the 
College Center and the Registrar’s office.  It takes only a few minutes 
to fill out.  This form, along with the FAFSA, determines your 
eligibility for a Cal Grant.

ARTISTS – National Portfolio Day, Saturday, January 15 at the 
California College of the Arts, 1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco.  
Tours and financial aid workshops – 10:00 a.m. to noon; Portfolio 
reviews – noon to 4:00 p.m.  This is your chance to have your portfolio 
reviewed by an expert.  Representatives of over 30 leading colleges of 
art and design will be present.  For more information, go to

SCHOLARSHIPS
Below is a sample of the many scholarships available in the 
College/Career Center.  Come by to get the complete list.

*Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Apply online at 
www.hispanicheritageawards.org or pick up an application at a 
participating Subway.  Printed out applications from the website will 
NOT be accepted.  There are 6 categories including academic excellence, 
community service, engineering & mathematics, healthcare, journalism, 
and sports.  Students must demonstrate an interest in their category, 
academic excellence and a commitment to community service and write an 
essay on the influence of their Hispanic heritage in their lives.  
Scholarships range from $2,000 to $8,000.  Deadline:  February 11 
(received deadline)

Civil Service Employees Insurance Group – Senior attending two or four 
year college or trade school in fall 2005, minimum GPA of 3.0 whose 
parent or legal guardian is currently employed full time by a 
government entity or if retired or deceased was employed full time by a 
government entity.  Essay required.  $500.  Deadline:  April 8.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship – Senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA who 
has taken either the SAT or the ACT and can prove financial need.  
Applications available at www.walmartfoundation.org.  $1,000.  
Deadline:  February 1.

Bay Area Professionals in Relocation Management – Senior with a minimum 
unweighted GPA of 2.5, minimum SAT of 1000, US citizen who relocated to 
one of the six Bay Area counties in the last 5 years.  Application 
available at www.scholarshipprograms.org.  $1,000.  Deadline:  February 
15.

Lewis H. Latimer Scholarship – Black senior with a minimum of 2.5 GPA.  
Essay and letter of recommendation also required. Applications 
available in the College Center. $500 minimum.  Deadline:  March 4.

Shattuck:
Free SAT practice session on Saturday, January 8, 9:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Free SAT strategy session  on Saturday, January 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 
noon.
Free PSAT scores back strategy session on Tuesday, January 18, 7-9 p.m.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) sponsors the 
Summer for Sickle Cell Science Program which offers a full-time, 
hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment.  Each student 
will work with a faculty mentor in his or her laboratory.  Applicants 
must be current juniors or seniors with a 3.0 average or better and an 
interest in science.  Applications are available in the College Center. 
An essay and letters of recommendation are required.  Deadline:  
February 15.
