SAT WORD OF THE DAY: GRATE - to irritate or annoy. After the car alarm had
run for 15 minutes continuously, its harsh squeals began to grate on my
nerves.
SENIOR SECTION
IT¹S NOT TOO LATE TO APPLY TO MANY CAL STATE CAMPUSES! The following
campuses are still accepting applications: Cal Maritime, Bakersfield,
Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton (engineering, computer
science and communications majors only), Hayward, Los Angeles, Monterey
Bay, Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Stanislaus, Humboldt, San
Francisco State (except for majors in nursing, radio & TV, cinema, apparel
design & merchandising, interior design), and San Jose State. Please come
see me if you would like help in filling out an application.
TONIGHT - FINANCIAL AID NIGHT FOR SENIOR PARENTS - Tuesday, December 7,
6:30-8:30 p.m. Berkeley High School Library, second floor of the new
building. A representative of the UC Berkeley financial aid office will
walk us through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
SAT/ACT TEST DATES: December 20 is the regular registration deadline for
the January 22 SAT test. This is the last time that the old SAT will be
given.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Hispanic Scholarship Fund - $1,000-$2,500. Must be a high school senior,
U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Hispanic heritage with a minimum GPA
of 3.0. Applications available in the College Center or at
http://www.hsf.net/scholarship/programs/hs.php Postmark Deadline: December
15, 2004
Metro PCS Community Scholars - $1,000 scholarship for high school seniors
living in the Bay Area with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0
planning to study at an accredited two or four year college or university.
Applications available in the College Center. Deadline: December 13.
Gates Millennium Scholarship - This scholarship covers the cost of
attendance of an undergraduate education. Students are eligible if they are
African American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander American or
Hispanic American, are a citizen or permanent resident, have a GPA of 3.3 or
above, have demonstrated leadership abilities and are low income.
Applications are available in the College Center or at www.gmsp.org.
Deadline: January 14, 2005.

FOR JUNIORS
*JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES - Presentation by United World Colleges on Friday,
December 10, 10:35 a.m. in the College Center. The United World Colleges is
an educational movement offering a two year International Baccalaureate
program. It brings together students, ages 16-19, from all over the world
at pre-university level to study together under the belief that if students
live and learn together they will return home and their understanding of
foreign cultures will foster international understanding, tolerance, and
peace. Successful applicants receive a full scholarship for the two year
program and many go on to attend some of the best universities in the world,
often with advanced credit. Nelson Mandela is the Honorary President. For

FREE PRACTICE FOR THE NEW SAT - From December 7 to December 12 the Princeton
Review¹s LiveGrader technology will be available free to all students
seeking to practice the New SAT essay. Within five days after taking the
test, Princeton Review will send them a score and provide detailed feedback
on how they can improve. Visit their website at
www.PrincetonReview.com/essay.
Tuesday, December 7th from 7 to 8:15 pm. New SAT Essay Workshop at Berkeley
Kaplan Center (150 Berkeley Square). This workshop gives students the
experience of writing a 25-minute essay under timed conditions, teaches them
exactly what the essay readers will be looking for, and introduces them to
some effective strategies for writing the SAT essay. Parents are encouraged
to sit in on the informational session that follows the timed essay
simulation.
Saturday, December 11th from 10 am to 2 pm. Free SAT 2005 Practice Test at
Berkeley Kaplan Center (150 Berkeley Square). Participants receive a
comprehensive score report that includes a detailed analysis of their areas
of strength and weakness on the test.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS
Discover Card Tribute Award - $25,000 scholarship. To be eligible, students
must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above for 9th and 10th grades and plan
to continue his or her education beyond high school. Students must
demonstrate accomplishments in special talents, leadership, obstacles
overcome and community service. All documents must be received by the
program by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 7.
REPEAT SECTION
CSU SAT CODE - If you are applying to any Cal State campuses, there is no
need to send your SAT scores to each one. Instead, use the code 3594
(CSUMentor) and your scores will go to all of the CSU campuses.
APPLY TO 33 HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES with the Black College Common
