The new attendance policy has officially been in place for one quarter.
Under the policy, three unexcused absences in any one class result in one
grade drop in that class. (That is, from an A to a B, or a B to a C, etc. )
Five unexcused tardies equal one absence making 15 unexcused tardies equal
to one grade drop. Close to 100 students saw their grades drop as a result
of unexcused absences and tardies. If students have legitimate reasons to
miss a class, parents have three days to excuse them. To do so, call
644-6209. Leave your child's name, grade, date of absence and reason.

On some evenings, the Berkeley Attendance Office makes up to 900 automated
telephone calls letting parents know that their child has missed one or
more periods during a day. However, many of these calls do not go
through--signal is busy, number is incorrect, call is intercepted. The 9th
grade administrative team wants to have volunteers call parents whose
students have missed five or more 4th periods--that is the period right
after lunch. We are also looking for volunteers who will call parents on the
second day after an unexcused absence to alert them they have one more day
to clear an absence. If you would be interested in helping either of these
efforts, please let volunteer coordinator Janet Huseby know by emailing
jhuseby at pacbell.net.
