Friday, November 19. Free for BHS students, Faculty and Staff. Have dinner
with us and hear some of the nations's bestyour jazz musicians in their
first concert of the season.

Both small combos will also perform sets. Tickets, available only at the
door, are $10 general admission and are FREE for Berkeley High School
students, faculty and staff. The box office opens at 7:00 p.m. Pizza,
sandwiches,
desserts, beverages and more will be available before the concert and at
intermission.

The acclaimed BHS Jazz Ensemble is celebrating 23 years under the direction
of Charles Hamilton, a
well-known Bay Area musician who has taught music in the Berkeley public
schools for more than 30
years. The group is known for including modern jazz standards (from Duke
Ellington to Charlie
Parker) as well as for pushing the envelope, from some of Charles Mingus'
wildest charts to
original compositions by band members. Berkeley High has spawned many
well-known jazz musicians,
such as Joshua Redman, Dave Ellis, Benny Green, Peter Apfelbaum, Steven
Bernstein, and members of
Mingus Amungus. Five members of the Ensemble were selected this year to
play in the prestigious
San Francisco Jazz High School All-Stars.

Proceeds from the November 19th concert will provide support for the band at
a time when funding
for music in the schools is at a low point. It will contribute to
purchasing much-needed
instruments and making it possible for every band member to participate in
the bands program,
regardless of his or her familys financial circumstances.
