SAT WORD OF THE DAY:   COERCE - to force someone against their will.  Sue's
older brother coerced her into taking the blame for the window he had broken
by threatening to take her candy if she didn't.

LOST AND FOUND:  We have a number of lost and found items some of which have
been in the College/Career Center for several months, some recently found.
These include shoes, a bracelet, a calculator and other items.  Please come
by to describe them and claim your precious items.

SENIORS
SENIOR AWARDS CELEBRATION:  Participate in the Awards Celebration to be held
on Tuesday, May 25th at 7:00 p.m.  Forms have been distributed in all senior
English classes.  If you have not received one, please come to the
College/Career Center. Deadline:  May 5.

JUNIORS
If you would like to be one of the MC's at the Senior Awards Ceremony on May
25th, sign up in the College/Career Center.

UC Riverside has a Guaranteed Acceptance Program (GAP).  If you have a
minimum 3.5 UC grade point average (10th and 11th grade classes in UC
approved courses) and a minimum SAT score of 1000 or ACT of 22, you are
eligible for the program. (Additional requirements for the School of
Engineering and the School of Art.)  The application period is June 15
through July 31, 2004.  Applications available in the College/Career Center.

TODAY, Wednesday, May 5, 10:35 a.m. - National Association of Black
Accountants

BIGGEST COLLEGE FAIR OF THE YEAR - Saturday, May 8, 1:00-4:30 p.m.  - East
Bay College Connection Fair at St. Mary's College.  Free shuttles from
Orinda BART station to the fair. More information, including the list of
colleges attending, is available at www.stmarys-ca.edu/ebcc.  Planning
guides are available in the College/Career Center.  Over 140 colleges will
be attending.

Monday, May 10, 7:30 p.m. - Exploring College Options, Student/Parent
Information Sessions with representatives from Duke, Georgetown, Harvard and
Penn.  Westin St. Francis, 335 Powell Street, San Francisco.  415-397-7000.

Tuesday, May 12, 12:20 p.m  - A representative of Diablo Valley College will
be in the College/Career Center to talk with you about the campus and
signing up for classes.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Chiron - Must be 16 years old and eligible to work for 8 weeks this summer,
beginning June 28th.  Several positions available.  Applications in D-221 or
at www.chiron.com.

Washington Mutual has a two year internship opportunity in the banking
industry for a current sophomore student.  Applications and more information
is available in the College/Career Center.  The position is open until
filled, so get your application in as soon as possible.

TESTING - DEADLINES AND PREPARATION
May 7 - Regular registration deadline for the June 12 ACT test.
May 12 - Late  registration deadline for the June 5 SAT I and SAT II tests.
I recommend that juniors take at least one of these tests if you are
considering applying to a four year college or university.

FREE SUMMER TEST PREP - People's Test Preparation Service.  Session I -
Mon/Wed, 2-6 p.m. beginning June 28; Session II - Tues/Thurs, 2-6 p.m.
beginning June 29.  All classes held at UC Berkeley.  Call (510) 642-4951
and leave a message including your name, grade, high school, phone number
and session preference.  Or e-mail summerptps at yahoo.com.  Register early to
ensure your space in the class.

SCHOLARSHIPS

SAN O BAR Social Club - Requirements:  Students must have a GPA of 2.0, not
exceeding 2.0.  To apply, students must submit their name, address, and
phone number along with an essay of between 300 and 5,000 words entitled
"Why I Want to Attend College."  Students must also submit an official
transcript.  Send all of this information to:  Sandra J. Johnson, SAN O BAR
Scholarship Committee Member, 843 - 54th St., Oakland, CA  94608.  For more

CSF Sealbearer - Must be a member of CSF for at least 4 semesters, including
one semester during senior year; demonstrate financial need; plan to attend
a college in the fall of 2004.  Deadline:  May 20.

UCLA Latino Alumni Association - Demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular
activities and volunteer service to the community, financial need.  Deadline
June 4.  Applications in D-221.

San Francisco State College of Business, P.Y. Wen Scholarship - California
resident with a minimum GPA of 3.25 with financial need who will be
entering the College of Business.  Applications available in D-221 or at
http://cob.sfsu.edu/cob/portal_student/scholarships.cfm. Deadline: September
30.


SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Syracuse University Summer College for High School Students - July 4-August
14.  Classes in architecture, law, liberal arts, engineering and computer
science, fashion and textile design and many more.  Regular application
deadline is May 30.  Applications available in D-221.

Youth Leaders Action Camp - Two ten day session - August 1-11, and 12-22.
Grades 9-12.  Develop leadership skills, learn job skills through natural
building, learn people skills through drama and camp out on a biodynamic

University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.  Includes
filmmaking, computer graphics, entertainment industry, screenwriting, film
studies.  Rolling admissions, deadline June 23.  Applications available in

Boston College Summer Experience Program.  Open to students who have
completed their junior year.  Classes are offered in a wide variety of
subjects.  Applications available in D-221.

Summer of Art at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles. Applications

Summer of Art).

UC Santa Barbara Summer Sessions for High School Students - Early Start and
Research Mentorship Programs available.  Applications available in D-221 or
at www.summer.ucsb.edu.
