WHAT SHOULD A STUDENT-ATHLETE DO IF THEY ARE STILL INVOLVED WITH A FALL
SPORT DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF WINTER SPORTS TRYOUTS?
Unfortunately, the CIF has developed a calendar where girls tennis,
football, and cross country are still competing in the regular season (and
may be competing well into November) and other sports like volleyball and
water polo may still be playing in NCS playoffs.
It is extremely important for you to COMMUNICATE with your current
in-season fall coach about your situation. With your current coach:
-
Emphasize that you are committed to finishing the season strong with the
fall team you committed to. This is your priority, but coaches also
understand that you may be feeling anxious about trying out for a sport
with limited spots. It’s a tough balance for you AND your coaches.
-
Discuss next week’s tryout and practice schedules. Is there any
flexibility? Can you do both (fall practice and winter tryout) or take a
couple of days break from your fall sport or do some sort of hybrid like
maybe going to part of a tryout or taking it easy at your fall practice
-
If doing both is simply not possible or not safe for you physically,
attend a make-up tryout.
Therefore, it is also very important for you to COMMUNICATE with the coach
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/winter-sports>
of the winter team you wish to play for.
-
They need to know that you DO plan on trying out.
-
They need to know if you will make it to all, part, or none of the main
tryouts (listed above) OR
-
They need to know if you will only be able to attend a make-up tryout,
at which point they can provide you with relevant information.

Other Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: I've done the Home Campus clearance but it still says pending
A: We're working on it!!! We are right up to noon on the day of tryouts!
Q: My physical expires during the season
A: Please get a new before Nov 3
Q: My physical expires during the season but my insurance won't let me get
a new one until it's been a year since the last one
A: Your doctor's office may complete the form without requiring a physical
exam, send it to them and ask. Otherwise, we recommend going to a local
clinic
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Resources/athlete-registration/local-clinics?authuser=0>.
Some charge as little as $25. You can go to your family physician through
your insurance over the summer to reset the 1 year clock to a more
convenient time in the year.
Q: Do we HAVE TO upload the BHS physical form
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xWwc01aHArfHK4fyY-JzYDjZw4ahCH17/view>?
A: No. Any “pre-participation physical” form will suffice. Whatever
form/format you use, PLEASE make sure the physician DATES, SIGNS, and
STAMPS the form and clearly notes that your student athlete is “cleared to
participate with no restrictions” (or some similar line).
Q: What happens if I'm not cleared by the first day?
A: You cannot practice/participate. Many teams have competitive tryouts and
this can impact your chances of making the team. Contact coaches
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/winter-sports>
ASAP if you have extenuating circumstances
Q: What should I do if I have an unavoidable scheduling conflict with a
tryout day(s)? (other than being a fall athlete)
A: Please contact coaches
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/winter-sports?authuser=0>
immediately to discuss make-up options if you have scheduling conflicts.
There is no guarantee that coaches can accommodate you.
Q: I don't remember seeing an email about my clearance status. How can I
check if I'm ‘Incomplete,’ ‘Pending’ (everything done and waiting for ADs
to get to it), ‘Denied’ (something is wrong - you'll receive a note saying
what is wrong), ‘Practice Only’ (uncleared transfer or grades issue), or
‘Cleared’?
A: Go to https://www.homecampus.com/login
1) Log in using the email and password you set
2) This will take you to the "My Student/Athlete Clearances" page.
3) You should see existing registrations under "My Student/Athlete
Clearances" - if not, change the year to 2024-2025 and hit search.
Note: check your spam folder if you've never received an email from HOME
CAMPUS
Note: the steps described above will also help you identify if you have
duplicate registrations that can be deleted.
Q: I registered before I had my physical ready. I now have it. How do I
upload it?
A: To upload your physical, take a picture or scan of it and then,
1) Go to https://www.homecampus.com/login
2) Log in using the email and password you set
3) This will take you to the "My Student/Athlete Clearances" page.
4) Click on the "Files" Icon of your 2025-2026 clearance
5) Upload your physical here and then hit "save and continue"
Q: I want to play a spring sport
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/spring-sports>.
What should I do?
A: You should also be selecting those sports when you submit your clearance
on HOME CAMPUS. We will clear athletes for those sports after semester 1
grades post in January. Spring sports
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/spring-sports>
begin on February 10th
Q: How can I support BHS Athletics?
A: Amazing question! There are several ways:
1) Volunteer for team jobs - coaches
<https://sites.google.com/berkeley.net/bhsathletics/Sports/winter-sports>
will have preseason meetings and be soliciting help for tasks ranging from
team parent, to drivers, to snack coordinators, to uniform coordinators, to
scoreboard operators, etc.
2) Donate to the Berkeley Athletic Fund!
<https://www.berkeleyathleticfund.net/> You will have an opportunity to
donate during the clearance process. BAF helps support coaching stipends
and funds capital projects, team travel, uniforms and equipment.
3) Come to a BAF meeting or, even better, become a BAF team rep. BAF meets
once a month. CONTACT BAF <https://www.berkeleyathleticfund.net/contact-us/>
for more info
4) Be exemplary student-athlete parents/guardians/fans
<https://www.cifncs.org/Sportsmanship/SpCh7_-_Parents_-_Fans_Doing_What-s_Right.pdf>
that cheer respectfully for both sides, model respect for the rules,
officials, and coaches, and help our student-athletes be the best they can
be.
