AP/IB exams season concluded on Monday, May 20 with the IB French exam held on
the BUSD Malcolm X holiday. Below is a summary of the high stakes testing
season which is coming to an actual close this week as Ms. Williams concludes
the make-up AP exams.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:

11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>This year, BHS offered 21 IB exams with
259 students taking 657 individual tests; and, 21 AP exams taken by 744
students (306 of whom qualify for fee reductions) for a total of 1,500
individual AP exams. Each exam had a paid administrator supported by 140
volunteer proctors. In addition, three volunteers helped with the AP pre
administration and at least seven volunteers showed up to help sell AP tickets
for a grand total of 150 volunteers. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:
11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>

11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>The 140 proctors rearranged their lives,
took time off from work, arrived as early at 7:15 a.m. and, in some cases,
stayed as late at 5:00 p.m. The proctors checked students in, quietly paced up
and down rows of folding tables filled with testing students, and sat in both
the men's and women's Lounge areas of the Community Theater restrooms with
extended time students. And, here's a fact worthy of doffing one's hat -- there
was not one no-show! Those who signed up, showed up. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:
11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:
11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>I was hired as Outreach and Volunteer
Coordinator in the fall of 2004. My first experience recruiting proctors was
in the spring of 2005. Just to compare I looked up my first calls for help in
the etree archive--yes, the etree has archives that go back to 2004, see the
link at the bottom of this posting. BHS had not yet instituted the
International Baccalaureate. We were, however, offering a full slate of AP
exams but most of them had so few test takers that there was no need to
supplement the paid administrator with volunteer proctors. My task was to pull
in 39 volunteers -- 101 fewer than this year! And yes, at the time I was
excited that 39 volunteers stepped up to help with the exams. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:
11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span style='font-size:
11.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>I don't know which fact is more
impressive: the explosive increase in the number of our students who are
challenging themselves to take rigorous college level courses, or, the fact
that our community of both teachers and volunteers has stepped up right along
with the kids to support them in their endeavors. My hat is off in humble
recognition that this is "some" community. May I repeat my favorite
mantra: Our children are fortunate to be surrounded and supported by people who
love and care for them. Thank you every one. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
