<p>Ms. Price and Mr. Barton will continue to provide financial aid application
assistance to <span class="" style>BHS</span> seniors, after school from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons, throughout the month of February.</p>
<p>Steps to be prepared for the Financial Aid Workshops:</p>
<p>1. Be prepared with student and parent social security numbers or taxpayer
identification numbers.</p>
<p>2. Bring your family’s most recent federal tax forms, such as 1040, W-2,
bank statements, etc. You will not have to reveal this information to anyone,
but you will need it to complete the forms. If your family’s 2012 federal
tax returns are not ready yet, bring 2011 tax returns for estimating.</p>
<p>3. Submit a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form to our Registrar’s Office (D-173)
as soon as possible. You can obtain a form from D-173. The Berkeley High
School deadline to turn in this form is <b>February
8</b>, 2013.</p>
<p> FINANCIAL AID: The <span class="" style>FAFSA</span> and the CA Dream Act application
periods are open from January 1, 2013 – March 2, 2013. In order to
receive the best financial aid package that you are eligible for, you are
highly encouraged to submit your <span class="" style>FAFSA</span> or CA Dream Act Application as early as
possible.</p>
<p>If you are planning on applying for financial aid, you and your parents
should sign up for a PIN# at <a href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/" target="_blank">www.<span class="" style>fafsa</span>.ed.gov</a>.
Applications are now available for the 2013-2014 school year. </p>
<p>IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT IN YOUR TEST SCORES FROM <a href="http://collegeboard.org/" target="_blank"><span class="" style>COLLEGEBOARD</span>.ORG</a> OR <a href="http://act.org/" target="_blank">ACT.ORG</a> TO THE <span>COLLEGES</span>
YOU HAVE APPLIED TO, DO SO ASAP.</p>
<p>Sending Mid-Year Grade Reports: For schools on the Common App, your
counselor who you have identified to provide a Secondary School Report will
also upload your mid-year report (transcript) online. For non-Common App
schools that require mid-year reports, you must submit a transcript request
form with a stamped and addressed envelope to our Registrar’s Office,
D-173. Please check all of your accounts and school websites for
requirements and deadlines. We recommend that you check all of your
accounts and school portals at least once per week for updates.</p>
<p><span class="" style>CSU</span> PLACEMENT TESTS: <span class="" style>CSU</span> requires you to take the English Placement Test
(<span class="" style>EPT</span>) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) before you enroll. Your scores
are not used for admission purposes, but they do determine which math and
English courses you should take to begin your career at <span class="" style>CSU</span>. Most
students will have to take the exam, but there are some circumstances under
which you may be exempt.</p>
<p>Seniors: If you are planning on attending a <span class="" style>CSU</span>, we encourage you to take
care of this requirement (Placement Tests) early in the spring.</p>
<p>By completing this process early, you will not have to worry about missing
any deadlines for this requirement. Free online preparation for these exams is

<p> We recommend adhering to the earliest deadline for any <span class="" style>CSU</span> that you’ve
applied to. Remember, <span class="" style>CSU</span> deadlines are campus specific, and CSU’s do not
all share the same deadlines. </p>

<p>Sending Test Scores to <span class="" style>UC's</span>: Remember, when sending test scores
to <span class="" style>UC's</span>, you only need to send them to ONE <span class="" style>UC</span>, and all other campuses will then
have access to your scores.</p>
<p>Sending Test Scores to CSU’s: SAT - List the <span class="" style>CSUMentor</span> institution
code, so that <span class="" style>CSUMentor</span> can store your scores for any <span class="" style>CSU</span> campus to
retrieve. The <span class="" style>CSUMentor</span> institution code for the SAT is 3594.</p>
<p> ACT - If you have listed a <span class="" style>CSU</span> campus as an ACT score report
recipient, you can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to
additional campuses. Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must
first have arranged for your scores to be sent to a <span class="" style>CSU</span> campus. If you have not
yet arranged for your ACT scores to be sent to a <span class="" style>CSU</span> campus, you can learn how

admittance pending receipt of your official senior year grades at the end of

registration! To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all
students and prevent test-taker impersonation, starting last fall the

<p><span class="" style>PSAT</span> SCORE REPORTS: The <span>College</span> and Career
Center will be distributing the remaining <span class="" style>PSAT</span> score reports to English
teachers during the week of Jan. 28. If you do not receive your results
from your English teacher by Friday, Feb. 1st, please check with Ms. Price or
Mr. Barton in the <span>College</span> and Career Center during lunch
or after school. Please note that these score reports have been available
for pick up in the <span class="" style>CCC</span> since Jan. 10, 2013.</p>
<p>CAREER LOCKER: Do you want to explore career opportunities and
possible majors for <span>college</span>? Career Locker is a
web-based program purchased for Berkeley High School students for career and <span>college</span> exploration. Students can use Career Locker from
any location that can access the <span class="" style>Internet</span>. This program includes
assessment tests, occupation and education search tools, and practice
questions for test preparation. For information on how to set up your

<p align="center" style="text-align:center">SUMMER <span class="" style>OPPORTUNITIES</span></p>
<p>The 2013 Metropolitan Transportation Commission High School Summer
Internship Program is now open for applicants.
The pay rate is $10.55 per hour.
Each internship will last up to a maximum of 250 hours. Students may work full-time or part-time, for
up to 10 weeks, between June 19 and August 30, 2013. For program requirements and information,

<p> The Arthritis Summer Science Internship Program: This program
places (12) outstanding high school students in the world renowned <span class="" style>Rheumatology</span>
and Immunology Laboratories at Stanford University and the University of
California, San Francisco. This internship program is designed to
encourage students to pursue a career in scientific study and research with an
ultimate goal of inspiring them to focus their potential on arthritis and

<p>Stanford Medical Youth Science Summer Program (Sophomores and
Juniors): Five-week summer residential program at Stanford, open to
economically disadvantaged and under-represented sophomores and juniors in high
school, who are interested in science, health and medicine careers and are
going to be the first in their family to attend <span>college</span>.

<p> FACES Summer Medical Academy for High School Students: The FACES
Coalition Summer Medical Academy is a tuition-based, intensive summer
experience designed to expose high school students to the fields of medicine,
nursing and allied health professions. Offered in partnership with Samuel
Merritt University (<span class="" style>SMU</span>) in Oakland, CA, the program dates are July 8 – July

<p>Washington University in St. Louis – Architecture Discovery Program
Portfolio Plus Program: This <span class="" style>pre</span>-<span>college</span> program

Ceramics, Communication Design, Painting, Printmaking/Book Arts, or Textile

<p>Rotary Club of Berkeley: Scholarship
applications are now available in the College/Career Center. The Berkeley
Rotary Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial and personal
support for deserving students attending high school in the city of
Berkeley. Considerations for
scholarships include financial need, the application package and personal statements
and recommendations. The program is
looking for well-rounded students who demonstrate they are prepared for college
through activities included in high school, community service activities, work
experience and academic achievement.
Applications are due March 15, 2013.</p>
<p> The Morris C. and Juliet James Achievement Fund: This fund is the
major fund-raising project of the Berkeley Retired Teachers Association,
awarding money to high-achieving graduating Berkeley High seniors. To be
eligible, you must have attended Berkeley schools for the majority of your
public school education. You may come to the <span>College</span>
and Career Center to receive an application.
Applications are due by March 12, 2013. </p>
<p> BERKELEY COMMUNITY FUND SCHOLARSHIP MEETING: The Community Fund
provides 4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically talented
and resilient Berkeley High School students. Application information
packets are available in the College and Career Center.</p>
<p>2013 Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival: Eligibility includes being a graduating
senior of Japanese American descent with a GPA minimum of 2.5. Applicants should be actively involved in the
community. Applications are available in
the College/Career Center, and the deadline to apply is March 19, 2013.</p>
<p>Italian American Federation of the East Bay:
Requirements include being a senior of Italian ancestry and graduating
from a high school in the East Bay.
Applicants will be evaluated by the following factors: Their scholastic
record, activity and other evidence of leadership and character,
recommendations from faculty, and a personal statement. Applications are available in the
College/Career Center, and the deadline is April 30. </p>
<p>The Hispanic Community Affairs Council and Albert C. & Bertha P.
<span class="" style>Markstein</span> Foundation: Requirements include
being of Hispanic heritage and a resident of Alameda County, and applicants
will be evaluated on financial need, scholastic record, essay, and
interview. Applications are available in
the College/Career Center and the deadline is Feb. 22, 2013.</p>
<p><span class="" style>Splawn</span> Scholarship: Requirements include demonstration of financial need,
minimum 2.6 GPA, and demonstration of paid or unpaid employment, community
service and/or extracurricular activities.
Students who have extraordinary circumstances in their lives as well as
students who may not have the chance to attend college without financial

<p>Young Women in Public Affairs Awards:
Recognizing young women for their demonstrated leadership skills and
commitment to public service.
Requirements include women who are ages 16-19, demonstration of active
commitment to volunteerism, experience in local or student government,
knowledge of <span class="" style>Zonta</span> International and its programs, advocating in <span class="" style>Zonta</span>
International’s mission of advancing the status of women worldwide. Deadline is
March 15, 2013, and applications are available at <a href="http://www.zonta.org/" target="_blank">www.<span class="" style>zonta</span>.org</a>

<p>Ann & Jon Reynolds Scholarship Awards (Seniors): These
scholarships will be awarded to the successful applicants at $3,000 per year.
Two <span class="" style>awardees</span> will be selected. The eligibility criteria includes a record
of community service involvement, a minimum GPA of 3.0, native born U.S.
citizen, and submission of a Student Aid Report Summary from Federal Student
Aid Program. Applications are available in the <span>College</span>
and Career Center. Application deadline is April 30, 2013.</p>
<p><span class="" style>NCGA</span> Foundation: Youth on Course is a
program of the <span class="" style>NCGA</span> Foundation. Through
the <span class="" style>YOC</span>, deserving youth have the opportunity to develop life skills and values
through golf. Youth who have never had
exposure to the game have access to clinics, on-course play, internship
opportunities and scholarships.
Applicants must meet the requirements of a minimum 3.0 GPA, and

<p>Community <span class="" style>NETwork</span> (for Seniors): The Community <span class="" style>NETwork</span> awards
scholarships to high school seniors. The eligibility requirements
include; academic good standing (GPA minimum 2.5), African American senior, intention
to enroll in a four-year or two-year <span>college</span> or
university. Applications are available in the <span>College</span>
and Career Center, and the deadline for submitting applications is March 1,
2013.</p>
<p> KIWANIS CLUB OF BERKELEY 2013 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: The Scholarship
Committee, based on the strength of the application, will consider applicants
who demonstrate academic ability, leadership and moral integrity, a commitment
to serve their school and community, and the greatest incentive to continue
development of their life goals. Kiwanis, as a service organization, is
especially interested in community service. Applications are available in
the <span>College</span>/Career Center (D-221), and all submissions
are due on or before Friday, March 1, 2013.</p>
<p><span class="" style>AMS</span>/Industry Minority Scholarships: The <span class="" style>AMS</span>/Industry Minority
Scholarships will award funding to minority students who have been
traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native
American, and Black/African American students. Eligibility includes being
a minority student entering their freshman year of <span>college</span>
in the fall of 2013. Students must plan to pursue careers in the
atmospheric or related oceanic and hydraulic sciences. Applications are
