Microbiology (iCLEM) program is an 8-week paid research internship program for
exceptionally motivated high school sophomores and juniors with an interest in
biotechnology. The program takes place at the Joint BioEnergy Institute in
Emeryville from June 21 through August 11, 2011. Applications for summer 2011
will be accepted between January 31 and March 1. The application deadline is

research skills and provides students with experience working on a bioenergy
research project in a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab. The teaching
staff includes two scientists and two high school science teachers. In addition
to basic science and research, the program also exposes students to career
exploration and college preparation including field trips to a local biotech
companies, career talks with scientists, help and guidance on writing a college
statement of purpose, meeting with a UC Berkeley admissions officer, and visits
to college campuses. Students are paid a stipend of $1500 plus a scholarship of
$500 upon successful completion of the program. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

or Contra Costa counties. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents
and must be 16 years of age by June 1, 2011. We seek students from
disadvantaged social/financial backgrounds for whom this opportunity would make
a critical difference in their lives. Students' household incomes must be
$60,000 or below. Participating students typically have taken Algebra 1 and
basic high school biology. Such coursework is not a requirement for admission
and may be waived for students who show exceptional motivation. Students who
are willing to work hard, come to work every day, ask questions, and talk to an
instructor when they need help will thrive in this program. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
