nombre de las PTA y las PTSA, nos gustaría decirles que lamentamos las acciones
del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos hace unas semanas
atrás, en las que estuvo involucrada una familia de LeConte, así como la
angustia e incertidumbre emocionales que muchas familias sintieron como
resultado de esto. Es extremadamente perturbador saber que estos tipos de
incidentes pueden suceder en nuestra comunidad y el impacto perjudicial que

impacto negativo y la confusión en East Bay fueron de gran alcance. Me llamó una
buena amiga, ciudadana naturalizada, cuyo hijo no quería ir a la escuela por
temor a que se lo llevaran los oficiales de ICE (<EM>U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement</EM>). Estaba asustado porque, como le dijo a su mamá, "Si
me quieren llevar, pueden hacerlo, porque no puedo probar que soy ciudadano".
Ella empezó a hacer fotocopias del pasaporte y del acta de nacimiento de su hijo
para que él pudiera llevarlas consigo, cuando se dio cuenta de que él no tenía
por qué hacerlo y que debía tener derechos. Ciertamente sí los tiene, al igual

importante conocer estos derechos. Simplemente hacer caso y responder a las
preguntas de los oficiales puede interpretarse legalmente como autorización para
que el oficial investigue. Por tanto, ninguna persona debe responder a las
preguntas o solicitudes de los oficiales, a no ser que el oficial presente una
orden adecuada. Sírvase leer la lista adjunta de pautas, así como visitar los
dos enlaces mencionados más arriba para enterarse más de sus derechos y los

size=3><SPAN>También queremos enfatizar que Berkeley es una ciudad santuario
—<EM>que en teoría significa que ningún empleado de la ciudad debe cooperar en
el cumplimiento de la ley federal de inmigración, a no ser que, al no hacerlo,
esté violando la ley estatal o federal</EM>— pero también significa que no
dejamos que nuestros vecinos inmigrantes se las arreglen solos, sino que estamos
preparados para tomar una postura y hacer lo que sea necesario para proteger los
derechos de toda la comunidad. El superintendente del Distrito Escolar Unificado
de Berkeley (BUSD, por sus siglas en inglés), Bill Huyett, dio instrucciones a
todas las escuelas de Berkeley </SPAN><SPAN lang=ES
style="mso-ansi-language: ES; mso-fareast-language: ZH-CN">de no permitir la
presencia de ningún representante de ICE en los recintos escolares ni tampoco
permitirles el acceso a los archivos de los alumnos. Tanto el superintendente
Huyett como el alcalde de Berkeley, Tom Bates, han pedido que se les informe
inmediatamente en el caso que se observe la presencia del ICE en los alrededores
de nuestras escuelas, para que puedan venir en seguida a encargarse de la
situación. Sus PTA también están listas para tomar una postura y no debe dudar
de ponerse en contacto de inmediato con la directiva de la PTA de su escuela, si
en el futuro volviere a ocurrir otro incidente. Nuestra comunidad escolar está
comprometida a mantenerse unida a nuestras familias inmigrantes y a apoyarlas
