size=3>As everyone is now aware, many families recently went through a very
stressful period due to the ICE (<SPAN lang=EN
style="mso-ansi-language: EN">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement</SPAN>)
raid on a LeConte family (as well as other raids and sightings around the Bay
Area). Below is a letter addressing the situation that is also being sent
out in Spanish. If you could all please read the letter and the attached
guidelines for dealing with ICE agents, and share it (in English or
Spanish) with any families you feel could benefit from the information, that
would be great. There are many families at Berkeley High that do not
have internet access and we are trying to make sure this information gets
out to everyone.</FONT></P>

size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">On behalf of Berkeley’s PTAs and PTSAs, we
would like to say how sorry we are about the Department of Homeland Security
actions a few weeks ago involving a LeConte family and the resulting emotional
distress and uncertainty that were felt by so many families.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>It’s extremely upsetting to know
that these sorts of incidents can take place in our community and what a
disruptive impact they can have on the community as a
whole<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT
size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">The negative impact and turmoil in the East
Bay was wide-ranging.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>I was called
by a good friend, a naturalized citizen, whose son didn’t want to go to school
for fear of being picked up by ICE (<SPAN lang=EN
style="mso-ansi-language: EN">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement</SPAN>)
agents.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>He was scared because, as
he told his mom, “If they want to take me, they can because I can’t prove I’m a
citizen.”<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>She started to make
copies of her son’s passport and birth certificate for him to carry around, when
she realized that he shouldn’t have to, and that he must have rights.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>He certainly does, as does everyone else
in the immigrant community.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

</SPAN>Therefore, individuals should not respond to an agent’s questions or
requests unless the agent presents a proper warrant.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Please look over the attached list of
guidelines, as well as visiting the two links above to learn more about your
rights and the rights of your friends and family.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">We also want to stress that Berkeley is a
sanctuary city -- <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">which technically means
that no </I><I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"><SPAN lang=EN
style="mso-ansi-language: EN">city employee should assist in the enforcement of
federal immigration law unless by not assisting they are breaking state or
federal law</SPAN></I><SPAN lang=EN style="mso-ansi-language: EN"> --</SPAN> but
it also means that we do not leave our immigrant neighbors to fend for
themselves, but rather we are prepared to take a stand and do whatever we can to
protect the rights of everyone in the community.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>BUSD Superintendent, Bill Huyett,
instructed all of Berkeley’s schools not to allow ICE representatives on school
grounds and to not give ICE any access to student files.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Both Superintendent Huyett and Berkeley
Mayor, Tom Bates, have asked to be notified right away in the event of any ICE
sightings around our schools, so that they can immediately come down to handle
the situation.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Your PTAs are also
ready to take a stand and you should feel free to contact your school’s PTA
leadership as soon as possible should another event happen in the future.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Our school community is committed to
standing together with our immigrant families and supporting them when difficult
situations like this arise. We consider ourselves a
family.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
