<div>Youth Writing Festival Tutors Needed</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Interested in a summer job during the month of July, or better
yet a volunteer opportunity?</div>
<div>Consider the Multicultural Institute's Youth Writing Festival,
July 7 - Aug. 1.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>During the Youth Writing Festival the tutor commits to providing
students small-group leadership and individual support as students
explore various forms of creative writing. Each tutor is
responsible for at least one large-group presentation related to a
particular type of poetry or prose (curriculum provided).
Working daily with students, the tutor relies on her/his own academic
and creative gifts, generosity of spirit, and good humor to assist
students with their writing, serve as role models, and broadly promote
academic and social success.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Responsibilities</div>
<div>Tutoring/Teaching:</div>
<div> Introduce students to writing examples, exercises, and
open-ended prompts;</div>
<div> Mediate small-group dynamics, especially encouraging
active listening and peer response;</div>
<div> Provide individual students encouragement and feedback on
their writing;</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Mentoring:</div>
<div> Serve as authority figure, role model, and resource to
students in areas beyond the realm of tutoring.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Orientation and Ongoing Support:</div>
<div> Attend initial screening, orientation session, and
scheduled meetings during the Festival;</div>
<div> Communicate regularly with program director for support and
additional resources.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Youth Writing Festival tutor works Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-
1:00 p.m. Tutors are required to attend a student poetry reading
session on the last evening of the Festival. A required orientation/
training session will take place the afternoon of July 7, and an
evaluation session on July 31.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The tutor must provide verification of TB-negative status and
submit fingerprints for a California Department of Justice background
check. English-Spanish bi-lingual ability and previous tutoring
experience are desirable.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The tutor may work as a volunteer or for an hourly wage. Specific
requirements for each of these classifications vary.</div>
