Hello BHS Community,
The following message was shared with BHS staff today to remind them of the
historic youth voting policy that is in place for the November 2024
election. Please check in with your student about how they can get involved
whether they are old enough to register or for all grades to participate in
the BHS Mock Election.
This is an exciting time and we will need everyone on board to support this
effort.

Hello Fellow Yellow Jackets!
This fall, we have a unique opportunity to instill positive civic
engagement in the BHS student body. As you may already know, 16- and
17-year-olds in Berkeley and Oakland are able to vote for their school
board in the November 2024 election as described in this press release
<https://www.berkeleyschools.net/2024/08/historic-first-for-california-16-and-17-year-olds-in-berkeley-and-oakland-able-to-vote-for-school-board-in-november-2024/>.
For Berkeley High, this equates to potentially 1,800+ eligible youth
voters. This number will greatly surpass the 5 cities in Maryland
<https://vote16usa.org/project/maryland/> which have a similar youth voting
policy.
We all need to work together to help students understand their voting
privileges, how to register and how to be an informed voter. And almost
more importantly, we will need to help students follow through and actually
vote. Without further ado, here are the BHS Youth Voting resources:
*Curriculum **major shout out to Allyson Bogie for adapting these lessons.
And major gratitude to Oakland Youth Vote for the original version.*
